TfL Off Peak Travelcard

I am considering purchasing an off peak travelcard for zones 1 -9. The TfL website states that this cots £12.10. This seems remarkably good value to include all of the tube, but what puzzles me is would this travelcard also include travel within zones 1-9 on national rail additionally, not just on the tube?

If so, £12.10 seems just too good to be true to cover all of that potential travel achievable in one day. Have I misunderstood something?

I doubt you've misunderstood, it's probably priced for non-enthusiasts. I expect it will be valid on National Rail

Thanks, obviously I would confirm the NR validity business at the ticket office if I was to purchase one. Are you "well travelled" enough on the tube to be able to suggest me a good line to travel on? I would ideally not like to be pressed into someone's chest jammed against a window, if at all possible! Are the outposts of lines such as the Met and Central pretty quiet at all times of the day?

Yes, it is valid on all National Rail services in the zones, except the High Speed services from St Pancras, and from Hayes & Harlington to Heathrow.

Do you not think that is brilliant value though? The combined cost of all the travel you could achieve on that ticket in one day (adding up the cost of a single/return fare for a journey you could make covered by the travelcard) must be pretty massive!

That depends on your point of view. To me, the cost of all the travel you could achieve on that ticket in one day is £12.10. There are lots of ways of making journeys more expensive, but it doesn't follow that you are saving by only paying £12.10.

Very good value, espeically if you're "going for it". Also includes buses, Croydon Tramlink and DLR. Does not include the Air Line though.

And if you can do without 7-9, a 1-6 at £8.90 is even better value!

IIRC it was only £6 when I moved to London in 2006 - and I thought that was very poor value, having spent the previous decade in a country where the typical bus and metro single was under 30p

£12 for Z1-9 is good value if you are actually using it for multiple trips back and forth along different lines. If you are making just a trip into and out of London, it's still cheaper than singles/cash but rather expensive.

The best value ticket I have come across is the MyMulti3 in Sydney. Currently $61 for one week, it was even cheaper a few years ago when I used it to travel 2500km - the entire CityRail (now Sydney Trains) network twice plus numerous buses.

Are there many National Rail stations in zones 7, 8 and 9?

I think Watford Junction, for example, is outside zone 9

If excluding London Overground (Carpenders Park, Bushey, Watford High Street) then there're three: Theoabalds Grove, Waltham Cross and Cheshunt.

Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Chalfont/Latimer, and Amersham are also served by NR trains but are LU owned stations
