Hi all,

Bit of a challenge for you, should you choose to accept!

I'm looking for the cheapest combination of tickets from Liverpool to Wembley Stadium (single) on Friday 15th November please, arriving no later than 6pm.

Here's what I've found so far:

Liverpool to Wembley Stadium (via Euston/tube/Marylebone): £25.75 adv

Liverpool to Birmingham (£5.95)
Birmingham (MS) to Wembley Stadium (£18.10)
Total: £24.05

Any other options gladly considered!

EDIT: I've got a 16-25 railcard.

It's cheaper to double-back via London Marylebone, "splitting" at Birmingham & London, compared to avoiding London (this is the UK Railway system we're talking about - expect pricing to be utterly bonkers).

There are loads of £12/£15 Advance singles BMO - MYB, and then the cheapest way to get back to Wembley Stadium would be to use Oyster PAYG (if you don't have an Oyster card, it's worth having one even if you only visit London once or twice a year).

The cheapest combination of walk-up tickets, by a rather slow route, is likely to be:

  • Liverpool Stns - Watford Jn Super Off Peak Single (by London Midland only) £25.90
  • Watford Jn - Wembley Central Oyster PAYG £1.60 (walk from Wembley Central to Stadium)
Prices shown above are before Railcard discount.

So it looks to be cheaper to use LM than Chiltern, and you don't even have to book in advance.

If you are happy to have an advance ticket, the above combination would be hard to beat I think with current prices at £9.65 including railcard discount:

  • Liverpool Stns - Watford Jn Advance (London Midland only) £8.60
  • Watford Jn - Wembley Central Oyster PAYG £1.05

Note that to get the railcard discount on your Oyster journeys you will have to have the two cards 'linked' at a TfL ticket office.

Many thanks for your replies.

Yet more proof that "train travel is expensive" can be a myth! Less than £10 from Liverpool to London just a fortnight in advance.
