A hypothetical/ fantasy thread, I suppose. Which is the best livery that each of the following had? (if you could only preserve one of each/ only had one of each on your model railway/ had to pick the main Wikepedia image for the relevant type of train)

  • 08/09
  • 31
  • 37
  • 47
  • 50
  • 55
  • 66
  • 86
  • 90
  • HST
  • First Gen DMU (101-123?)
  • Pacer
  • 150
  • 156
  • 158
  • 165/166
  • 168/170
  • High Speed DMU (180/ 220/ 221/ 222)
  • PEP style EMU (313-315, 507-508)
  • MK3 bodied EMU (317-322, 455-456)

(happy to include "large logo"/ "white roof" and various subsections of Railgreight - have tried to go for stock that's had a few liveries to choose from - if you include oddities like the purple "Porterbook" Deltic - since a lot of ancient stock only ever ran in blue/green and a lot of modern stock has only had one or two liveries)

  • HST — Original Blue/Yellow
  • Pacer — FNW/GMPTE Red/Grey

Again these are just the ones I have an opinion on:

HST = FGW Fag Packet
Pacer = Valley Lines
150 = FNW 'Gold Star'
156 = RR 'Express'
158 = TPE Maroon
PEP style EMU (313-315, 507-508) = Network SouthEast
MK3 bodied EMU (317-322, 455-456) = Network SouthEast with WAGN triangles by the doors (this only really applies to 317s).

For those I have an opinion on (and have existed):

66 - EWS
86 - Virgin
90 - Intercity
HST - GNER
Pacer - Regional Railways
150 - London Midland
156 - EMT
158 - First Great Western
165/166 - First Great Western
168/170 - London Midland
High Speed DMU (180/ 220/ 221/ 222) - Virgin
PEP style EMU (313-315, 507-508) - Merseyrail (New)
MK3 bodied EMU (317-322, 455-456) - NSE

And then I could go into fictional liveries...

HST - the Early Intercity livery

  • 08/09 - BR blue with the bold "diagonal" end
  • 31 - "Dutch" Railfreight (yellow/ grey)
  • 37 - Large Logo blue, with a big Scottish depot image (stag, castle etc)
  • 47 - ScotRail style 47/7
  • 50 - Another one that suited Large Logo blue best IMHO
  • 55 - two tone green (I had a two tone green one on a model railway many years ago - think it was "MELD")
  • 66 - Freightliner green/ yellow works best
  • 86 - original Virgin black/red with the three stripes (a nod to Stagecoach's involvement? was this back when Stagecoach still had the three stripe livery on buses?)
  • 90 - InterCity Swallow livery - one of the few types of train that suited this
  • HST - GNER - was never a big fan of the TOC, but it was a great livery
  • First Gen DMU (101-123?) - orange and black Strathclyde/ Manchester
  • Pacer - I think that the Valley Lines red/ white/ green livery was good
  • 150 - Anglia's turquoise
  • 156 - NorthernSpirit green/ blue (with the big "N")
  • 158 - has to be the original Regional Railways colour scheme - they looked so modern back then
  • 165/166 - Thames Trains with the big blue areas around the doors
  • 168/170 - National Express ScotRail - a garish mix of orange, purple and green (designed to appeal to both sides of the "Old Firm"?), but brings back memories of one of the first batches of new units in the privatised railways
  • High Speed DMU (180/ 220/ 221/ 222) - Grand Central black/ orange
  • PEP style EMU (313-315, 507-508) - I think that the Saltire liveried 314s look good in Glasgow (for such old units)
  • MK3 bodied EMU (317-322, 455-456) - Silverlink 321 - the brash purple/ lime reminds me of the early days of privatisation where TOCs were desperate to look as different as possible (from British Rail, from each other) - so very '90s!

Why only these specific types, might I ask?

Just a compromise between listing dozens of types of engine/units (many of which have only had one or two liveries) and only having a couple listed (which basically comes down to "which is your favourite TOC".

Am happy for any others to be added to the list, of course, just trying to strike a balance. Maybe a "Slam Door" EMU should have been on the list, since they got a few liveries post-privatisation (in which case I'd vote for First GreatEastern's white/ blue/ green - a great livery, especially when run in multiple)

I would paint each one in a livery that it never carried, just to annoy the purists. :D

Okay... I've limited myself to liveries carried by at least one of each grouping by the OP:

08/09: Railfreight grey.
31: Civil Engineering Dept 'Dutch' yellow/grey.
37: BR Large Logo blue.
47: BR Blue.
50: Revised NSE.
55: BR Blue with 'Finsbury Park' white window surrounds.
66: As they're basically identical to 59s, ARC yellow/grey.
86: Anglia blue.
90: IC Swallow.
HST: GNER (ideally without the DDA-enforced red doors!).
First Gen DMU: Oban 'Mexican Bean'.
Pacer: WYPTE 1980s green/beige. Maybe Valley Lines for units in that area.
150: Provincial blue.
156: Provincial 'Sprinter' variant.
158: WYPTE 'Raspberry Ripple'.
165/166: NSE (168/0s included in this as they look like turbos anyway!).
168/170: Midland Mainline 'Stag' livery.
High Speed DMU (180/ 220/ 221/ 222: FirstGroup 'Barbie' with Northern mods.
PEP style EMU (313-315, 507-508): Merseyrail silver/yellow.
MK3 bodied EMU (317-322, 455-456): Southern green/white.

I did consider it, but then I went for the "N" livery on a 156 instead... I know what you mean though, maroon and gold was a really good colour scheme

(in hindsight, I wish I'd gone for NSE livery on a 50 too)

Until it got First vinyls. And then, in one case, Central vinyls. And then EMT vinyls.

Sadly this monstrosity of a livery has been put out of its misery and the unit in question is now wearing a standard Stagecoach white.
