I notice from their timetable that there is 0540 Edinburgh-King's Cross service with a call at Newcastle only, providing a journey time of 4 hours.

Is this service well used and after Newcastle does it get its foot down all the way to London or is it slowed down through stations like York?

I'd say it has generally been busier than the 2 services which follow it. It's popular on account of its arrival time, which is ideal for many business users.

It tends to have a clear run after York and without the stops it has a good chance of arriving within 5 minutes or so of its booked time, but of course once it reaches Peterborough, it is essentially locked into the bigger picture of all southbound traffic and just runs in its slot between other services.

Speed on the centre road through York is 25mph.

Although it is frequently held up around Grantham if the service from Hull is late, as it goes onto the slow line to allow this train to overtake, as it was today in fact!

What's the point of that? The train from Hull would have been behind it all the way from Doncaster and since 1E01 will be running non-stop to King's Cross, why would it delay the train from Hull?

No, the train from Hull Will delay 1E01, as it is in front until Grantham.

I once tracked it for three weeks my monitoring suggested that it arrived bang on time about two or three times, within ten minutes five or six times and the rest of the time it was more than ten minutes late.

I see that the York stop is not being introduced for the new timetable, some members though that it might have been.

As previously stated this train ran as 06.00 ex-Edb due Kgx 09.59 under INTERCITY as 'The Scottish Pullman'. It arrived on time around 30% of the time. We also had Datalink which was the Senior Conductors link for train faults & passenger loadings. Although days varied with Fridays as now the quietest morning, this service calling at Newcastle & York tended to leave the final stop with approc 90 in 1st & 110 in standard on a good day. Would be interesting to know what it does now withouth York.

Its worth remembering that most of these where Full Open fares & not the as then Saver or Apex tickets.

I'd guess, based only on my own occasional use of the service, that its more than that now, probably 100 / 210.

But as I said above, the following services are much quieter (06:48 and 06:25 off Edin.), so much so that whenever I can, I'll join the 06:25 (07:55 at Newcastle) and enjoy the extra space - just once I had to share a table for four! I guess its loading is close to 80 / 120.
