No Credit Card to pick up pre-bought Ticket

Schoolboy error! I booked tickets this morning on East Coast Trains for Daughter to travel home this Friday from London Euston with my credit card. Half way through transaction realised I’d left the card in my jeans back pocket back up North. But I thought ‘never mind’ as I knew the 3 Digit Code on the back. However I now have confirmation but can’t print the tickets as you need the card they were booked with to print from the machine! (I'm in London Monday to Friday and wont be going home till Friday). So either I will have to get my wife to take the card to our local Station to ‘collect prepaid tickets’ using my credit card and then post to me or my daughter or to post me my credit card - but that maybe not a good idea.

Any ideas if there is a better way round this mess I've got myself into - maybe cancel journey and book another one and take the hit of the cancellation charge? The ticket is an off peak Return London Euston to Chester with 16-25 rail Card.

You could try asking a ticket office if there's one nearby. I don't know how able or willing they'll be, but it's worth a try.

Phone East Coast's Web Support team and explain the situation to them. They may be able to authorise collectin of the tickets without the card.

It's so easily done as my credit cards are registered on East Coast site with all my other details so the only thing I need to remember to buy tickets is the 3 Digit code from the back!

What's wrong with that so long as it's your card? I know my credit card details off the top of my head for the purpose of not having to get my card out of my wallet all the time! (and partly because I've used them so frequently it's difficult not to remember them!)

It is of course nothing to do with EC what you chose to do with a card which you are authorised to use.

Why's that? I can remember the 3 digits myself for WebTIS sites which remember the other details (and sometimes the full 16 digits and expiry date for other websites!) and didn't realise it wasn't allowed!

Again, why not? I frequently make online purchases without the card in front of me since I know my card number and the security code .

I think you've already got your own solution specified for you — either get the card or the tickets posted to you, or cancel, costing a tenner, and rebook using a card you have or buy at the station.

When my cards were stolen I rang the help-desk at EC who said to go to an EC station with photo and, i think address, ID and they could be collected.

The 'new' driving licence fits that - do you have it?

Tickets can be collected from any machine not just the one you specified when you ordered online, just get you partner to use your card with the booking reference and then post tickets Special Delivery to you or your daughter.

I've picked up tickets without the credit card a few times. I've went to the counter explained and they've said 'I'll only do it this once', never had a problem though!

If not, ask if they could use some sort of security question? Or maybe use the phone number provided on the account to verify?

Thanks for the replies. Wife going to use my card and print from machine at local station today and post them to daughter today - so should be here well before Friday. Agree that on EC website although you nominate a station to collect at you can actually use any machine as long as you have the code and the card that the tickets were purchased with as I've done this a number of times.

I was in a similar position to you, needing to pick up tickets but without the card I had booked them with. I was driving to Scotland and had booked on East Coast to come back by train. Half way up I realised that I had forgotten or lost my wallet so didn't have my credit card to pick up the ticket.

I phoned East Coast - they were really helpful and they allowed me to pick up the tickets from a machine using my partner's credit card. I don't know how they do it, but they prefer to arrange it for a time when you are going to be able to pick up the tickets (just in case someone by mistake enters your specific code and gets your tickets printed out). I phoned them when I first realised I didn't have my wallet, and they advised me to phone back on the day I wanted to pick the ticket up. Once I did that they advised it would take 2 hours for the tickets to become available and I think it did actually take that long.

I don't know if they do that for everybody or on a one off basis. At that point I didn't know if I had left my wallet at home or if I had lost it / had it stolen so that might have made a difference.

The technology allows it- you can collect Rewards tickets using any card, and TheSheepLine offer a similar service for business customers- but they obviously don't want to promote it too heavily.

Indeed - the travel agent my employer forces us to use (at great expense, sadly) will book tickets for us and we just use any card in our name to collect them.
