Leeds to York rail electrification bid launched in Harrogate

A bid to improve train services on the Leeds to York line by electrification before the end of the decade, is to be launched in North Yorkshire.

The scheme would double the frequency of services on a line with a 20% increase in passenger numbers over the last five years.

It would also mean a faster, more comfortable journey, campaigners said.

Brian Dunsby, of Harrogate's chamber of commerce, said: "We have been working on this important plan since 2008."

Mr Dunsby, the chamber's chief executive, added: "We have a very high chance of success, the scheme has a high benefit-to-cost ratio".

'Dramatic change'

The improved line would use a "standard 25kV overhead-line system" and "cascaded" second-hand trains, according to the bid.

Andrew Jones, Conservative MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough said: "I know from my postbag how welcome this dramatic change in our rail services would be to commuters and other rail users."

Mr Jones said he had worked alongside local councils, the chamber of trade, Northern Rail, Metro and Network Rail to prepare a business case for the Department for Transport.

Richard Allan, for Northern Rail, said: "The Harrogate line has seen a number of improvements in recent years and passenger numbers have continued to grow.

"We welcome any improvement that would improve customers' journeys and reduce their travel time."
I hope branham tunnel is enough clearance to support these overhead wires. Would be a quite expensive job otherwise.

Bramhope Tunnel had a major overhaul about 10 years ago which allowed a long standing 20mph TSR to be lifted. I seem to recall this was because of clearance issues which were resolved by the overhaul. So hopefully it is possible, although it will still be costly because of the length of the tunnel.

What's this? Where's the fourth rail and cascaded LU D stock?

If done properly, the Harrogate line is an easy win, and would free up quite a few DMUs.

It's certainly good news that the necessary local polititians are on board. Lets hope it gets off the ground soon.

Any use of D stock was always going to be horrendously difficult in practice. They have presumably realised there are easier options. Note the statement that they actually want cascaded stock...

It is very good news for this line.

I have always been amazed that Harrogate which has always been a 'conference' town and popular with business men, has never had a more frequent express service.

Until recently it just had the one morning London train, at least now there is a return working as well, but surely a town like Harrogate should be able to generate enough passengers for a more frequent service?

Presumably NR have also told them in no uncertain terms that they wouldn't support any form of 3rd rail electrification which kills the use of D stock stone dead. If it's going to be electrified and remain part of the national rail network it'll be with overhead AC; the only other choices are for it to remain diesel or for it to be converted to light rail, which would mean dedicated track in to Leeds and York stations and the removal of the East Coast through service.

Tram-train has been discussed for the Harrogate line, both for a new branch to LB Airport and for the Leeds-Harrogate-York service itself.

It seems sensible to launch such a scheme on the back of the existing electrification schemes already announced. It makes sense as an opportunity attached to a big scheme rather than a stand alone scheme cost wise as well. It is much easier to roll this into the existing contracts rather than tender of a stand alone scheme.

I also assume this would help to release more DMU to strengthen the non electrified Northern services and allow for diversions etc.

Good - sounds a lot more realistic than the publicity stunt of a couple of years ago - its electrified at each end - its virtually self contained - it would free up useful stock (75mph DMUs) - it has a London service - it could do with some extra capacity between Harrogate and Leeds - it really needs capacity between Horsforth and Leeds - it makes a lot of sense to me.

High up the list in CP6.

Do I get the general overall feeling that common-sense is now prevailing towards railways? It seems so and I hope so.

Personally I think there are more major routes which should be a higher priority than the Harrogate line, as a fairly contained line a better DMU service could be offered with cascaded DMU's, while the London Service can be maintained with Hybrid IEP.

Still at least its a more sensible scheme than the D78 scheme

Harrogate line is potentially ripe for major service upgrades which might become practical with the reduced operational cost base produced by electrification.

That and/or they found out about the number of substations that they needed for 3rd/4th rail running in comparison to overhead AC and found that it was therefore cheaper, if there were to be electrification of the line, not to use the "cheaper" 3rd/4th rail system.

When the HST timetable was introduced, it included a through service about every 3-4 hours (ditto Bradford). IC soon realised that an HST was being wasted beyond Leeds and re-allocated it to extra "main line" duties. This may have been to allow the Deltic+8 semi-fasts to go over to HSTs.

From experience, the number of through passengers (as opposed to Leeds commuters) on the two morning Shipley trains isn't huge, and I guess that goes for the Harrogate too.

Was that not a deliberate ploy by the Harrogate Chamber of Trade and Commerce to be as outrageous as possible, in order that their proposals for the upgrading of the Harrogate line obtained the highest amount of publicity.

It certainly caused a great deal of hilarity on this website at the time, with the more fertile and creative minds of certain forum members given free rein..:D

The idea of running old tube stock around somewhere isn't necessarily a terrible one.... but it could not be a line so heavily integrated with the national network :P

Does one dare mention the idea of bringing the 332s to West Yorkshire at this moment?!

We could be looking at a golden age, if things carry on like this - whilst the Harrogate plan is just a suggestion at the moment, the fact that such things are being talked about shows how ambitions have changed

They are probably posh enough for the folks of Harrogate!

61x 315s? Bit overkill for Yorkshire.

16x314s, on the other hand...

Well I have a significant number (~35?) units chalked in for the Welsh Valleys, so 26 other units doesn't sound utterly ridiculous for the Leeds/Sheffield area....
