Hello,

I regulary travel from Brighton to Bury St Edmunds to visit relatives.

Just read an email about Martin Lewis talking about splitting tickets, however I don't think I can beat the current price of £19.10 for an Advanced Single each way. (£38.20 return).

Can this be beaten? I don't have a network railcard and Bury St Edmunds is just outside the coverage area.

Even a Brighton to Cambridge return is £31.90 with a railcard, then £13 for an off peak return from Camb to BSE, totalling £44.90

I suppose it could be possible with a Southern advance £5 BTN to Victoria , then an £8 advance from Liverpool Street to BSE? Then £2.10 Oyster fare = £15.10 each way ? However totally screwed if one train is late, as will miss connection.

Unless you can buy Southern Advances from Victoria, the £19.10 advance is probably the best value for money for the journey. Below is another suggestion, but is slightly more expensive.

Bury St. Edmunds to East Croydon Advance Single- £14.90. Southern Daysave which has to be booked in advance for the rest of the journey there and back £14.00 if travelling the same day back on Southern services only of which 3tph serve East Croydon.

East Croydon to Bury St Edmunds Advance Single £14.90.

Total if travelling the same day £43.80

You can shave a bit more money off at weekends by buying a Super Off-Peak FCC Only return from either London Bridge or East Croydon at weekends or Bank Holidays for £10.00 instead of using Southern Daysave.

You should purchase a Zone U1* Londn ticket to/from BSE instead of London Terminals. These are available with a £3 premium each way (so £11 each way). You will then be covered for delays whilst travelling. In order to have a valid itinerary, you need to leave at least the minimum connection time between your arrival time at Victoria and departure from Liverpool Street, which is 63 minutes, and vice versa.

A Zone U1 ticket includes a cross-London transfer so you will not have to pay for it using Oyster PAYG.

Thanks bb21, so if I had two seperate tickets BTN to VIC and ZoneU1*London to BSE
and the BTN to VIC train got in at (eg) 1230 instead of 1200, and I missed my (eg) 1310 Liverpool Street to BSE (via Ipswich) , would I therefore be covered to board another train at Liverpool Street, despite two seperate journeys/tickets?

That is correct. I attach a copy of Advance Fares FAQs from The Manual. Question 22 would answer your questions on when you are covered and when you are not. You have two separate tickets, which together cover one journey, from Brighton to Bury St Edmunds, and vice versa. This is permitted under Condition 19 of the NRCoC.

You may wish to bring a copy of the FAQs with you.

Have you looked at the Brighton Cambridge Southern+Greater Anglia fares?

(Sorry haven't had time to check them myself)
