Crewe or Carlisle overnighter

planing a trip to crewe on a overnighter next mth how are the staff and btp with spotters these days it will be my first outing in like 18 years i will have a valid ticket to be on the station getting the 22.40 Glasgow to Crewe i think it is then returning on the first train up in the morning i have i was thinking of Carlisle but i'm not sure if they shut at night i nkow some stations like York shut at night or this is what i have been lead toi beleave

I know others have asked about Carlisle before, and can only repeat what they have said and from my own experience, unfortunately I have no experience of Crewe.

The staff at Carlisle are very enthusiast friendly, and will allow you to stay overnight if you ask permission even leaving one of the toilets open for you.

thanks for taking the time to get bk to me no doubt at a guess this stations managed by VT if so i will plan a visit in advance and email them with a few weeks notice i'm disabled and just returned theres a few rail centres a wish to visit just to find my feet i have a little visit planed to chorley this week thanks for taking the time to get bk to me colly

You mention York, but the largest gap between trains is only 86 minutes. Did an "overnighter" shared between Leeds and York a couple of years ago and had no problems at either.

York is open 24 hours (just about). TPE services through the night plus there are the late trains from King's Cross to Newcastle.

OMG memories -never done Carlisle but did Doncaster regularly in the late 1970s and Crewe many times. Have fun. Hope it works out for you. I have bookmarked this thread as I am intrigued at how times have changed.

These days you'd probably see a stream of the same locos (66s), although Carlisle usually produces something different every hours or so.

Doesn't most of the freight at Crewe go through the avoiding lines that are in tunnels? I remember being very disappointed and confused by the lack of freight when I went on a day time trip many years ago.

Carlisle's staff are brilliant, the overnight station manager let me use the train crew toilet, even filled my flask with hot water. Just find the Station manager and let him know your staying overnight. All the frieght uses the avoiding line at Crewe, so would probably be better hitting Stafford if its still allowed but it'll be pretty bleak.

I'd deffo be up for the Carlisle overnighter, not done it in like 20 years, there used to be a wee chippy across the road from the station that was open till 4am..

One of them opens at 7 am for breakfast - used it earlier this year when staying at the Travelodge there. Go for the big one - it'll keep you going till the evening.

IIRC it is the one further down Botchergate from the station (Woodrow Wilson?). I had thought the first one was open at 7 - the doors were open and lights on - but they were taking a delivery and just used the other one instead.
