FREE - Old (and not so old) magazines

Having a clear out. I've a load of mags from recent years and a load from the 80s and earlier. Would there be any preservation group out there who could make use of them?

As you will have to deliver them yourself, it would probably be best were you to approach your nearest and ask them.

When I downsized on retirement a few years ago, I approached the GCR at Loughborough regarding giving them quite a few transport books, and they were delighted to receive them.

The Ribble Steam Railway is about a mile from me. I answered a request for old magazines which they put out on facebook about a year ago. They made me feel like I was being a pain. After dialogue with them, I turned up as requested with three bags full and was greeted with something along the lines of "must you bring them here? We don't want them but will take them off your hands if we must." Very upsetting. The only way it could've been worse was if the bloke was being paid rather than a volunteer.

I was at the GCR a month ago for the diesel gale. Liked Loughborough and the railway.

The Weardale Railway at Stanhope may want them, on a couple of occasions I've fold old magazines on sale for very reasonable prices

(That might be near you, being 'Oop north' but then 'Oop north' is a big place, and I'm assuming you mean the North of England!)

What an awful greeting for you,I can assure you Llangollen railway would have made you feel at home, trouble is some volunteers or not what they appear,might be good with the shovel, but poor at PR. I too would have been more than annoyed if it had come from a paid employee,you must have left wondering will they burn them.

Whilst I agree with you about the attitude it's fair to say that many railways are bombarded with offers of this kind.
I always thank the person enthusiastically and wait until they are out of sight before putting them in our paper recycling skip!

Which is fair enough, but I was responding to a request they put out on Facebook for such magazines.

Oh in that case I agree its very bad.

I had a load of railway mags a few years back so hired a van and drove them to the Wensleydale Railway (in the snow) and this old duffer said 'oh, these are really hard to sell, we've just dumped a load'. I was so angry. I said well just give them away. I used to volunteer on that line too and drive a 90 mile round trip to help out and that was the attitude.
This year I went to the diesel gala and asked if I could display a small poster on Leyburn Stn shop for my model rail show in York and the bloke said 'I'd rather not give permission as I'm just helping out'. The only refusal I've had.
I left promptly because I could have lost it big style.

The Swanage Railway accepts railway / transport books and magazines.

They have a stand for magazines at Swanage and a stand and book counter at Corfe Castle.

IIRC they resell magazines at 20 pence each and books from £1 each.

On behalf of a sadly departed friend I donated 350+ magazines and about 60 books. As far as I can ascertain all have been sold on

We're off to the K&WVR this weekend, so I emailed them to see if they could use them. They replied quickly that the folk at the Vintage Carriage Museum at Ingrow West would be delighted to have them.
