I've heard a rumour that Manchester Victoria will be closed from the 24th December 2013 until the 3rd January 2014. I'm guessing that this is something to do with the roof? What will happen with the services? Are buses going to be ran, or will be be looking at Diversions to Oxford Road and Piccadilly?

I think electrification work will be done too.

The Blackpool's are going into Oxford Rd and the Clitheroe and Wigan are Terminating at Salford Central. Most trains from Leeds are terminating at Rochdale expect one train going down to Moston

My impression is that the electrification is the reason and not the roof.

I think a lot of work is being done at Man Vic over next few years and it is just a big bang.

Any news on what are happening to service to/from Liverpool via Chat Moss?

Running to Manchester Airport - the fast services don't run as far as I can see, so the all stations service takes over its path. Lime St-Warrington BQ services run to Earlestown only.

I did hear they are to lower the lines under the bridge at the east end, plus as mentioned put up the metal work for the wires, but not the actual wires at this stage.

How the track lowering will work I dont know as surely they will have to do something to the platforms at that end, noooo idea.

The Manchester Metrolink East Manchester line route through to its final terminal point of Ashton-under-Lyne will be officially opened on Tuesday, 9th October.

Although slow compared with the train, Metrolink tram will be a better quality journey than any "rail replacement bus" which are always a dreadful experience, taking forever to load and unload then following devious routes around one way systems and stuck in traffic jams, lurching and swaying on uncomfortable seats. I know the engineering shut down is necessary and ultimately will bring a better rail service but I do not pay rail fares to travel on a BUS.

I doubt they will be valid, Victoria is Metrolink ... will be closed for a similar amount of time

Surely the Manchester Metrolink service will access Manchester Piccadilly railway station, Piccadilly Gardens and Shudehill bus station, as those come before Manchester Victoria on the route. However, has anyone details of what the Manchester Metrolink services will use a temporary terminal point during the Manchester Victoria closure period on the East Manchester line from Ashton-under-Lyne.

It would seem logical to run East Didsbury-Ashton by splicing the two severed southern halves of the Victoria routes together. Perhaps with a Mediacity-Shudehill shuttle. Are there turnback facilities near Shudehill? Perhaps temporary ones could be built near the beginning of the Victoria blockade.

when the last blockade of Victoria was in place the East Didsbury trams ran to Droylesdon.

I would have thought installing temporary turnback facilities would take longer than the Victoria blockade.

ok, if they are turning back the Huddersfield locals at Ashton I think I would rather take a tram from there into Manchester. I wonder if rail tickets to Victoria will be valid on Metrolink?

Is there a decent connection at Stalybridge to/from TPE Piccadilly services?

From my experience in Greater Manchester:

The train fare from my local station is less than the tram and bus fares from the local stops.

The 'bus replacement' service is usually timetabled at 10 minutes less than either the tram or the bus from local stops, and regularly makes the journey more than 5 minutes less than the timetable allows, unlike the trams and buses.

The 'bus replacement' is often a coach with quite comfy seats, unlike the seats on the local buses and the tram (assuming you can actually get a seat).

So all in all, I'd say the value of the rail ticket for a 'bus' is quite good in comparison to the bus fare for a bus and the tram fare for a tram.

Is there a decent connection at Stalybridge to/from TPE Piccadilly services?

33 mins connection time (or 3 minutes if you are quick) currently going in to Manchester (from Ashton), 35 minutes (or 5 minutes if you are quick) in the other direction. From stations to Huddersfield it's 45 minutes going in and 16 minutes coming back.

The plans released by the TfGMC showed services through Victoria on the single line as:
Altrincham - Bury
East Didsbury - Rochdale
Other services would be amended to:
Ashton - Eccles
Bury - Abraham Moss
None of these would call at Victoria as the metrolink through is being remodelled. This pattern of operation will run for 9 months from the start of the new year.

During closures of the main station metrolink does not call at Victoria.

And if ever NR need no traffic through usually Rochdale services terminate at Central Perk.

And it also does appear that electrification will be carried out during the Christmas blockade, it was posted on SkrScraperCity

Why? What are the comparative journey times?

Do you mean Metrolink? If so then it will take from Ashton to City Centre about 30 to 35 mins so anyone who travelling to Ashton by train would found it easily to catch replacement bus service to Manchester would Victoria is closes for 9 days, saying that anyone who travelling to Manchester in Ashton/Stalybridge area will found it easy to catch train from Stalybridge to Piccadilly then catching tram or replacement bus service to Manchester.

The Manchester Metrolink East Manchester line route through to its final terminal point of Ashton-under-Lyne will be officially opened on Tuesday, 9th October.

Do you mean Wednesday 9th October Paul. :)

when the last blockade of Victoria was in place the East Didsbury trams ran to Droylsden.

I would have thought installing temporary turnback facilities would take longer than the Victoria blockade.

I don't think East Didsbury trams every when to Droylsden when Victoria was closed and last time Victoria was closes, the Droylsden trams run to Eccles via MediaCity and East Didsbury trams run to Piccadilly.

Paul, is this on the correct thread?

It was made in response to someone who was considering the use of the new Manchester Metrolink terminal stop at Ashton-under-Lyne should he wished to do after detraining at the railway station.

What are the public transport services like at Central Park that would be available in addition to any tram-replacement services.

Based on your avatar, was that deliberate?

...... perhaps ;) .......

Not entirely certain but I think First Manchester operate 88/89(?) into Shudehill/Piccadilly. Metrolink replacement buses aren't exactly great it's a pity there isn't a heavy rail interchange there so tickets can be accepted on trains between Central Park and Viccy/Wherever when there met closures.
