I seem to have a technical issue with the forum and several attempts to send PMs to the administrators about it appear to have failed to get through.

Is anyone else having the same problem as below?

In the last week or so something on the forum is causing IE to freeze up repeatedly.

This happens both at home ( XP with IE7 ) and at work ( W7 with IE8 ) and it's only happening with this site; none of the many other sites I visit cause any problem at all.

Therefore I think there may be a problem and it'll be from something that was done around the middle of the week; Wednesday or thereabouts.

Nothing here, the forum is sometimes slow but it's more likely server demand or bandwidth demand

I'm in San Francisco at the moment and it's reasonably ok compared to its usual snail pace.

Had loads of freezes on mine (XP W8) but I thought it was the MODs trying to get rid of me*!

Actually it hasnt been too bad the last couple of days but last week was stupidly slow and the site hung continuously.

* This part of that is humour, you know funny ha ha and is in no way meant as a slight against the MODs! ;)

IE7 is a very out of date browser and has had numerous security vulnerabilities. I would certainly urge you to avoid using IE7 when accessing banking or other financial sites for your own safety.

I would suggest as a minimum upgrading to IE8.

Even better I would suggest giving Chrome a try it offers far better performance and reliability.

Anything but IE, it's only useful for downloading a superior browser, such as the suggested Chrome, or Firefox etc. :P

Sorry Peter, I did receive a PM from you that was sent on 23 September, which I have appeared to overlooked. I wasn't online at all at the time it was sent, so I didn't receive an alert, and I didn't notice your message when I logged in again today.

I have not noticed any problem myself, and I am not aware of any updates that have been carried out to the forum. Sorry again.

I don't use banking online, or other financial stuff for that matter.. Have tried Chrome and once was enough. Yes, I'll move to IE8 but I need to get hold of the consultant first...!!

Trouble is, I need to move from XP as well as that's not supported from next year but W7 is absolutely horrible - for a start I can't get the open windows to "tile" along the bottom of the screen like I can with XP... just a series of overlapping nameless squares. There's also a lot of other so called "improvements" to the presentation which are the exact opposite!

Must be down to another dodgily coded advert then?

At work, IE has a tendancy to crash when viewing the forum on a lunchtime, but not if I middle click to open in a new tab...somewhat odd but since it is only a lunchtime thing I can live with it. I think it is IE8* and on Windows 7

* it may be IE9 but I use it so infrequently I can't actually remember!

One problem I have with the forum is when I want to reply to a post or even start a new thread, I log in, type my reply or thread starter, click on the "post reply" box, I then get a message stating "you need to be logged in to post a reply", (or something similar), I then log in again and my post has disappeared, most annoying, especially if it's a long post. Does anyone else have this problem?

On the plus side, the habit of making IE "not responding" seems to have stopped within the last couple of days.

I had this with Chrome, it's to do with having http:// in the address bar or not as I used to log on without the http:// showing and then clicking a link which brings it up and I have to log in again. Ticking the "Remember me" box on both of them solved this.

I think it's more likely one having the www. and the other not. If the forum isn't set up to manage this, you can effectively be logged in to one and not the other.

That is what I meant, I was thinking to myself that http:// isn't normally there anyway but I couldn't think what else it could have been so just went with it, I'm not thinking straight today :(

That is possibly it, some members or external websites erroneously provide links to the site without the 'www.' - unless you were previously logged in here, this will not work!

That will just be the timeout for security - happens to me too, but usually it doesn't drop the post if I log straight back in. If you "Remember me" then it will hold your credentials in a cookie and you won't have this happen (which I do on computers I browse the forum on regularly)

Is there any reason we can't have the non www. version forwarded to the www. version so this problem wouldn't occur? I have done many sites like this where there are issues if users go to one version of the site (and to be honest, having to put www. in before URL's is so last decade ;))

There are instances where two or more active login sessions might be desirable and this is a simple way of allowing it, other than using 'Private browsing' or having multiple browsers open.

Hmmm....this wouldn't be for about a dozen people would it, rather than the membership of thousands? :P

Can't this dozen people use a different address like staff.railforums.co.uk which had HTTP basic authentication applied in addition?

I find that the forum is very quick to time me out and make me log in again. Sometimes even after I log in it makes me log in again immediately afterwards, despite the 'welcome' message appearing to tell me that I'm logged in! I've got into the habit of typing in longer posts in Word then pasting them in to avoid losing them when the forum times me out.

Sometimes It tells me I'm not logged in even when the links bar at the top is displaying the 'log out' option!!
