Royal Scotsman Failed at Markinch.

The Royal Scotsman failed at Markinch yesterday (Sat. 21/09/13). It caused chaos as due to the Stirling blockade all the Glasgow - Perth traffic was routed through Fife. Ouch!!

I saw this passing Inverkeithing (what a truly dismal town that is BTW) yesterday, about 10 mins before it all went wrong. Sounded fine passing through so I'm not sure what went wrong between there and Markinch. We had a clean run around the loop however directly behind it so it must have been somewhere between Thornton North Jn and Markinch that everything failed.

Feel quite lucky I was off work and managed to miss these delays but our lass who works on the catering was 2 hours late! Read on my work phone that the Edinburgh Tbird was due to be sent out but was cancelled and that a 57 was to be sent (apparently there were two 57s on a train going south around the North Queensferry area). The Mrs. told me that it was a scotrail which rescued it (seems a bit strange to me, especially considering the incompatible couplings between a 47 and a 158 or 170). Does anybody have any more information on what actually happened? I know 47854 was the failed engine as I saw it stabled in Dundee the night before.

If it had to happen, glad is was a diesel and so not a cause for more bad press for steam.

But bad press for this particular service however, thats twice in as many months its gone bang in Fife with major delays to regular passenger and freight traffic.↲ last month it was if memory serves on time in its usual Friday Path when the Skip? Hauling it failed at Burntisland. The anti Duff brigade will doubtless be along soon along with those who (wrongly in my opinion) ↲dont want premium tourist trains running on crouded mainlines.

Im told it was just before Markinch but dont fully trust my sauce. BTW inverkeithing isnt actually a bad place to live, v friendly, or it was up to Oct 07! ↲

Does anybody have any more information on what actually happened?

I heard a loco from a topped & tailed railtour service was detached to render assistance.

There is a set of facing points before and after Markinch, so things could get around, but of course, that's only when there's space to do so.
