Gatwick Express at London Bridge

Can anyone shed any light on the Gatwick Express train that was outside London Bridge at 18:02 today. Was rather odd.

Doesn't one of the peak London Bridge-Eastbourne services use a 442?

It couldn't of been, as that is timed to leave London Bridge 21mins after I saw it going down towards Croydon.

Yup, two 442's from London Bridge on a weekday pm peak, one to Eastbourne, one to Brighton. If I'm working one, often give a little wave to the spotters at London Bridge, they never wave back, bunch of missery guts :roll:

I'm working the up one from Eastbourne on Tuesday, cover for sickness.
Hows this for a short job.

Come in at 5.01. Work a 377 to Eastbourne.
Hang round for over an hour
442 to London Bridge
Make my way to East Croydon
Work a 377 to Victoria
Pass back to Brighton
go home

If I recall correctly this is why they no longer say Gatwick on them, as they are used for other express services. They only do limited stop runs, presumably due to the limited door size, not quick enough to load and unload.

The 17:56 is normally alongside the Class 171 waiting to do the 18:08 to Uckfield.

I believe the peak-time Eastbourne - London Bridge services began using 442s from the 30th March 2009.

The 17:56 is normally alongside the Class 171 waiting to do the 18:08 to Uckfield.

Since the closure of platforms 14, 15, 16 at London Bridge, the 442s come in on platform 11, the 17:59 to Horsham comes into platform 9 & the 18:08 Uckfield comes into Platform 10 after that! 442, 171, 377, 456 all adjacent in the platforms...makes quite a sight

Sometimes, the Horsham & Brighton service will depart at the same time; the Horsham taking the Spa Road Junction Route & the 442s going over the 3 track Bermondsey viaduct to New Cross Gate.

The later inbound Eastbourne 442 service can often be seen trailing an Overground service on the 'slow up' as you travel out of London Bridge.

Are you sure it said Gatwick Express? As others have said, these trains, which are leased and operated by Southern, are simply branded Express (unless one of them has escaped having the Gatwick wording removed?)

They generally operate on Southern's Gatwick Express route as well as Southern's Brighton Express route (these routes are shown on Southern's route map), with a morning peak working from Eastbourne to London Bridge & evening peak return, being an exception to that.
