Apart from the safety side of things does any one know what I am to expect on the rail's as a blue hat novice?

Listen and understand instructions, when a train is approaching raise one arm above your head for a few seconds (you dont need to keep it up until the train has gone by but an acknowledgement is appreciated) and think how nice it would be to be in a nice warm office when its peeing down with rain and you are soaked to the skin.

The Pway is quite a good place to work and there will be loads of variety so just enjoy it.

Seriously, though, just listen in to your COSS briefing and if in doubt ASK! Never be afraid to ask a question if your not sure.

Don't forget to turn away from the train as it passes. Especially if you're on a line where they still use dump toilets.

Unclipping / Clipping rails is a frequent job for stressing.
Shovel work clearing ballast is another.

The rail is unclipped from the sleepers, stressed (pulled into tension), welded up and then the clips are knocked back in to fasten the rails to the sleepers.

You have fast clips, pandrol clips and keys.


The keys are used with wooden sleepers in the chairs. Fast clips are used on G44 (concretes) and steel sleepers. The pandrol clips are used on other concrete sleepers (F27), there are other fastenings but not as common.

Tea making should already be instilled in him as should the cafe run, as for heavy equipment carrying, oh pulease that s what trolleys are for!
