Hi guys

Just wondering what the options are for an individual wanting to commute from the Crayford area to Cannon St. I assume there isn't really anything cheaper than a standard annual season from Crayford to LT, but does this ticket allow travel via Slade Green? Is there any ticket that gives more flexibility on the lines?

Thanks
Pav

A quick look at BRfares.com shows that Crayford is in the same flow as Barnehurst and Slade Green, so the 7DS 'should' be valid for travel on all of the Cannon Street loop services which serve the station regardless if you travel via Hither Green, Barnehurst or Slade Green.

A London Terminals season will also be valid to London Bridge, Waterloo East, Charing Cross, Victoria, Blackfriars and City Thameslink.

Somebody else with a bit more expertise will be able to tell you if you can also travel via Dartford or not.

If on a through train to a London Terminal (one that will stop at London Bridge, Cannon Street, and/or Charing Cross), and you are intending to remain on this train until one of the above stations and not leave beforehand, then you may travel via Slade Green or Barnehurst.

If you are not travelling to a London Terminal but intending to get off before then, then you may only travel via Bexley.

I believe this has come up before, and that travel via Dartford is not permitted.

I can't find a definitive reference to this.

Dartford is certainly outside London Travelcard zones / Oyster PAYG area (although I believe it is covered by the London Councils' Freedom Pass (older / disabled peoples pass)

If we're talking season ticket to London Terminals, don't think you're going to find a cheaper way of doing it. If we're talking travelcard, you could perhaps save money by taking a bus in a zone or two, but this will of course add to journey time.

Ah, I thought that easements take precedence over the 3 mile rule, as TCBC states - sorry :P

This ticket is indeed valid for travel via Slade Green, including stopping short

What is more, the easement in question does not forbid travel from any of Crayford, Barnehurst or Slade Green because you are not going via that station if you start there.

  • There are no through trains that reverse at Dartford, to the best of my knowledge.
  • Crayford to Slade Green via Dartford is 3.75 miles according to the National Rail Timetable, so this route is not valid
  • Crayford to Slade Green via Dartford is within 3 miles of the shortest route from Crayford to Slade Green, so this is permitted by the routing guide, apart from negative easement 700061:
Customers travelling from Slade Green to or via London Charing Cross may not travel via Dartford. This easement applies in both directions.

It is permissible to travel from Crayford to any London Terminal other than Charing Cross (so London Bridge, Cannon Street, Waterloo East, City Thameslink, etc, are fine) using this ticket via Dartford

Ah, I thought otherwise - thank you!

  • I am sure that no trains are advertised as London - Dartford - London, they are London to Dartford or vice versa.

The idea of 'roundabout' trains on the SE is relatively new - most such trains used to be shown in the timetable as (say) London to Crayford, then ecs round the curve, then form a Barnehurst to London train.

I know there has been discussion here a while ago about just what ticket or Oyster validation you ought to have / will get away with for a journey like Hither Green to Blackheath via Crayford, and I'm not sure I understood the answer...

It is permissible to travel from Crayford to any London Terminal other than Charing Cross (so London Bridge, Cannon Street, Waterloo East, City Thameslink, etc, are fine) using this ticket via Dartford

Are you sure? I'm sure it's been stated with some authority on here in the past that you're not, and people have mentioned RPO's booking people doing so at Dartford.

Or is it permitted with a "station X to station Y" season ticket but not with a Travelcard or Oyster?

As an aside, season tickets on the Dartford lines used to have validity for more than one station, although this may have been due more to prices being the same and cutting down on ticket stock needed, than trying to make life easier for passengers. My late father's season ticket always used to be 'Lee or Kidbrooke' - London (SR) for example.

It is not permitted with a travelcard or with Oyster as in doing this you would be leaving the London zones. Remaining within the London zones is not a consideration with paper tickets (eg a valid route from West Drayton in z6 to Feltham in z6 is via Windsor, in Berkshire)

Oyster is perfectly fine if travelling via the Cannon Street loop services as they don't leave Zone 6, so Crayford to Slade Green is charged at the NR zone 6 fare. As someone else mentioned, London Freedom Passes are valid to Dartford.
