Not a bad series so far. Ignoring the continuity errors (how many trains are going backwards?) i think its turning into a decent documentary

Channel 5 documentaries are not noted for detailed accuracy. In the last Stobart series they managed to move Sheerness to Essex - though later in the programme it was correctly referred to as being in Kent. Very poor quality control there!

Do regular commuters at castle cary get priority over festival goers?

I wondered that, a free one day first class upgrade for season ticket holders might have been a nice touch!

What do you suggest for the First Class season ticket holders?

i would hate to have to stand next to muddy people in a Saville Row suit!

After a shift at Temple Meads some years ago when the Glastonburyites were going home from a wet weekend I remember walking out onto Platform 3 and my shoes sinking into the depth of mud that had accumulated. I dread to think what state the Hastings DMU that was doing a shuttle was in.

Not really, the one time I worked a special following Gastonbury, I took it over at the TGS, coach A& B were empty, but First Class looked like the crowd scene from Ben Hur!

Ah I see! My experience is of different festivals where very very few would be in First Class! That'll teach me to speculate without local knowledge!

The Turbos don't usually go to Castle Cary but during Glastonbury this year some of the trains from Paddington to Castle Cary were worked by Turbos.

Surprised to hear some Turbo's worked some of the extra London Paddington-Castle Cary services for Glastonbury. Interesting. What were the stopping patterns for these services?

Just watched programme 2, and was really pleased with the coverage, short though it was of Her "Madges" Queen Brenda's visit to St. Ives and to see the dunes at Lelant, and the branch which was my old stomping grounds.

Once again - when you look past the overly dramatic tone in a few places and the continuity errors, it's a rather enjoyable documentary.

For a Channel 5 fly-on-the-wall documentary, this is actually pretty good in that respect
I only really noticed it in this episode when they had to get the barriers moved in time for the Glastonbury people :D

One of my daughters stopped watching Channel 5 documentaries because she was fed up with the over-dramatisation. This series is definitely better than most of them.

Couldn't agree more with the above! You just have to watch one of their police interceptor or emergency biker shows to realise just how ridiculously over dramatised they are.

Really good episode last night, once again. Anyone notice the cab light being on in the middle of the Severn Tunnel? Plus, the guy who probably rang his guardian to pre-warn them of the RPO asking for his DOB annoyed me quite a lot.
Also, nice to see the guy from the Beeb series at Twyford :D

I enjoyed the driver part too

Are driver managers really like that or was he being super formal?

It seems strange that they would reply on the word of someone over the phone to check if a passenger is young enough for a child ticket. As appeared to happen on the programme, this is easily open to abuse. If no proof of age could be given I would have thought a (checked) name & address would be taken for further enquiries to be made. It is hardly surprising that many peopel choose not to buy a ticket when the majority of those who get caught seem to just be made to buy a ticket or pay a £20 penalty fare.

Considering the late Adam Faith‘s last words (which were apparently not very complimentary to channel 5) I have found the series very entertaining and watcheable. I also like the fact that the commentator refers to the InterCity 125 by its correct title.

Another great show, particularly good as I know Twyford station pretty well.

Production wise, the programme again tended to jump between stories and then back again quite erratically, which can be annoying.

There were a few more silly mistakes in the continuity again this week. While the story was about trains to Henley Regatta, they showed on a couple of occasions a piece of in cab footage from a train approaching the terminus at Bourne End (on the nearby Marlow branch), while in another scene, hoards of regatta goers loading into a Turbo were suddenly punctuated (for a few seconds) with people boarding an HST.

Still a great documentary programme, which shows the real people (such at Norman at Twyford) in a really good light as the credit to the railway that they are. I look forward to next week's show.

Jumping back and forth is now standard practice to keep people interested.

I did think the Ribena girl was over dramatising a relatively minor problem (managing the children). Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are many things to delay trains but the production company must have asked her to make it seem like a bigger deal.

And if it left Paddington one minute late it wasn't going to be twenty minutes late by Hereford.

It seemed the right mentality had been drilled in to her nonetheless, those odd minutes are important and getting group bookings on the trains earlier seemed like a good pro-active approach to preventing delays.

Yes, the logic was right but I think she still somewhat exaggerated the situation (well, she was clearly guessing a lot of it from the vagueness of what she said).

Still, she does a worthwhile job and bring over cautious is better than the opposite.

That depends on the DM! Most are very friendly and very informal-you can have a nice chat and as long as they can see you are being sensible they are happy. Others seem a bit OTT and formal, at least to start with. I think that one was just slightly playing up to the camera or sort of slightly uncomfortable with being filmed. That ride out scene did seem a little rehearsed and scripted. The whole 'what does being a professional driver mean' bit seemed more like a qualified driver job interview than a ride out...if my DM started asking me questions like that I'd tell him I want to concentrate on the road and not answer those kind if questions I think!

I suspect that the lining of questioning (which I agree seemed more like something you'd get at an interview!) might have been used to try and explain the role a bit to those watching the program. I mean how many people would have thought that the driver of their early morning train might have got up a 0330 having gone to bed at 1900 and still be driving at 0800 or similar?

Just a thought anyway.

Being asked about preparing for work (including his answer about going to bed early and preparing for hot weather) are competency based questions which form part of the "check ride".

I know, but it seemed very rehearsed how it was put across and I don't know many DMs who would actually ask those questions, most can tick those bits of the forms in other ways. Perhaps it's just how it's done on some companies.

I agree the 15 (empty) coffee cups and empty prozac box on the desk should give it away!
