How many people still 'fall' for the hi-vis jacket of a PCSO that looks like that of a real police officer?

I am sure it's good to convince (con?) law abiding people that there's more visible policing, but I'm less sure that the criminals and lowlifes are fooled - or are particularly scared.

I have to agree with that. Even in my role as a guard I notice certain people moderate their behaviour (conversely not when they are doing anything anti social or even remotely illegal) when I enter the carriage. Others (chavs/jaikes), however, have to be told off.

Now a point about PCSOs is that although they have the same powers as a citizen (with some additional powers depending on force area) IMO they will be more used to using them and more importantly have the backing of their employers. Unlike a rail employee or passenger.

A lot of the low-life haven't that much of a clue. Again, speaking from experience, I'm sometimes addressed as a Police Officer, and have to point out that I'm not. To me, it's obvious that my uniform is different from a Police Officer's in that it clearly has a company name on it, and a job title above it. Also there's no black chequered hat band or black epaulettes. I think people just see the hi-vis and assume things before looking further in to it. It's not the same all the time, but I'm surprised at just how many people are like this.

I've never been on a FGW operated HST service. How many customer facing railway staff [this excludes the driver] are typically on-board FGW's Intercity services?

Minimum is 1, train manager. Most of the time, there will be a buffet customer host, but not always. Weekdays there should be a First Class CH, up to 2000 anyway. If a travelling chef is on the service, there may be another CH, or Service Leader. Pullman services, I've no idea, seems to be dozens of them when they land into Pad messroom!

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

The incident at Windsor where there were numerous RPI's and PCSO's yet they had to call Thames Valley police to remove the kids who were making themselves a nuisance from the station.

I've seen incidents (not railway related) where yobs have treated PCSO's with total contempt but soon start behaving when the real police turn up.

Usually 3 or 4 on weekday services. If it gets busy I've seen other staff helping the train manage with counting passengers so that they can determine whether to hold connections or not during periods of delay.

A quick 'heads-up' for tonight's episode on Channel 5 at 8pm. (Also on Channel 5 +1 an hour later at 9pm)

Season 1 Episode 2 of 12
Staff have to deal with more than 100,000 festival-goers travelling to Glastonbury by rail from around Britain and the royal train stops at St Erth station in Cornwall, before the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh board a scheduled service to St Ives. There is drama at Castle Cary when a passenger falls onto the tracks and police and workers struggle to pull him to safety

Looking like a good series so far

I must apologise though as I really can't help but notice some of the continuity...like at Castle Cary where it went from 165, to HST, to 165, to HST, to 165, to HST, and all in the space of 30 seconds!

Looks like the "tanking" of trains is going to fall to Cross Country Voyagers...well, I guess they can't really do it on a HST :P

Continuity seems even worse this week than last.

I disagree actually, the Mark 3/Turbo door situation wasn't great, but apart from that I haven't noticed anything jarring.

I'm really enjoying this episode, some familiar faces are helping :)

Really really enjoyed it; I noticed the criss-cross of Mk3/Turbo shots but it didn't matter one bit. Next week will be a good one it seems - especially as it shows the guys 'up front'!

Do Turbos even go to Castle Cary? I would think it would be a 150 with power doors at Castle Cary.

Yes FGW were using class 165/166's to work teh extra trains between London & Castle Cary for Glastonbury. FGW also ran class 165/166's on a Reading - Bedwyn - Westbury service when Reading was closed back last easter

There was a thead at the time on this forum along with some photos showing a class 165/166 at Westbury and Castle Carry

The Turbos don't usually go to Castle Cary but during Glastonbury this year some of the trains from Paddington to Castle Cary were worked by Turbos.

All the branchlines down there are really nice. The best, in my opinion, being Looe. The whole area is worth a trip (and either the Ride Cornwall for a day trip or a Devon & Cornwall 3 in 7 are good rovers for doing it on). Also worth taking in the Night Riviera sleeper service as well.

Thanks, I have boxes so will have to do a few days down there

The best bit was the magic trick where after several minutes covering the loading of an HST at Paddington for Glastonbury, there was a flawless edit to the despatch of a single Turbo unit...

I like them showing the arrival of an HST at Castle Cary, the slam doors swining open, then an internal shot of passengers alighting from a Turbo .

I think this requires study. It could be the answer to all our capacity problems!

At the end of the 1st ep, I'm sure ive come across those teenagers before :(

I noticed he was pumping the loos on a cross country.

Do regular commuters at castle cary get priority over festival goers?

Quite a good episode.

As i'm sure i've mentioned before. I'm so glad i don't live in that area (did live 3 miles from the Station at Cary) As those days when the festival was on were hell.

Although the last time i was in that area was when Wessex Trains were running and had extra services with FR 31s and Mark 2s :P
