Hi
I (and missus) will be going KingsX to Dundee Friday Sept 6 and coming back Tue 10th. Need to stay off-peak (for cost) but my questions are:

Are the straight-through trains (10am KingsX) really busy? Am I better off splitting at Edinburgh and then to Dundee a little later in the day say leaving KingsX about 11.

Any advices gratefully received from those that may do this journey.

The 14:27x Edinburgh, the 10:00 from Kings X is busy yes however if you went with a post 11:00 departure from the cross youd be changing in Edinburgh at the start/middle of the evening peek and although you may well still get a decent advance and some of the Scotrail services, particular those heading to Aberdeen are faster than East Coast through Fife they do get very busy and are opperated by DMUs as aposed to the HST youd be on from London.

If you dont mind reaching dundee at round quarter to 10 at night the last direct train from London may be worth looking at as its too early for many comuters from the cross and misses the evening rush in scotland all together. On the way home tqe first or 2nd direct runs from Dundee are the best for you.↲

Thanks Blindtraveller.. My main concern is not to have to be standing (as I had to recently from Exeter to Paddington. Your info is useful, I will consider the late direct train (dept KingsX 1400?) although my partner may feel that its too late to meet our Dundee friends.

Would you estimate the Friday 10.00 likely to be so busy that I can't get a seat?

Thanks for your help.

Yes thanks Wellhouse. Have just found that out but have left it rather late. Looking now. Thankyou

OK... sorted. KingsX to Edinburgh dept 1300. Reserved forward facing table window (I'm happy with that). Stay in Edinburgh overnight (which actually suits) then Dundee on the Saturday. Return on normal Dundee-KingsX

Thanks for all your help - very appreciated.

If you are concernd about the risk of standing, can always make seat reservations.

True, but East Coast policy is that if seat reservations are not displayed then they cannot be enforced, so it is best to avoid busy trains if possible.
