It's a bit more subtle than that. There is an interesting trend that those on Incapacity Benefit are just getting knocked off (no matter what), but for those that are applying for ESA for the first time it appears to be a bit more random though with a trend against getting the Support Group the first time round for sure. Doesn't matter if you're so deformed that you cannot eat without retching (therefore only eat once you're starving), you're clearly fit for work related activity with a return to work to be considered within three months :roll: Then again we should be grateful that they weren't just found fit for work! ATOS at least acknowledged that they're not completely fit for work
It's tough to get ESA when you're blind as the criteria are stacked against you. I assume he's claiming PIP (or DLA)? As that's basically a dead cert if you're blind. Still might be worth contacting a local Welfare Rights Unit (alternatively Citizens Advice Bureau but they can be very variable) as they maybe able to help regarding the ESA.
