Could anyone be kind enough to advise on the cheapest way to do the following:

Fri 13 Sept
East Croydon - Fareham
Depart any time up to around 1130, non-flexible ticket OK

Sat 14 Sept
Winchester - East Croydon
Probably after 1600, but would need flexible ticket

Many thanks.

re the [Southern] DaySave idea - they do take rather a roundabout route back to London though [I've done it] taking c2.5hrs.

If get to Southampton Central... and chose a LATE fixed time train ...
Southampton - London is a Megabus/Megatrain route - still some £6 fares for that day
eg
Departs 17:55 Southampton , Central Train Station
Arrives 19:34 London , Waterloo Train Station
1hrs 39mins
or £10 on 15:55.
Southampton Station is only a 10 minute walk from city centre [or free shuttle bus, though maybe not that frequent on Sunday] so could distact yourself somewhere if early ?

PS
Just realised I'm probably not being much help as you're East Croydon, not "London"!
Southern train reduces to 2.15hrs. Sorry for my careless reading.

Great suggestions, thank you. I never thought of Megatrain from Southampton, but unfortunately I need to be flexible re return time, so am going with Old Shire's idea. It's a long way round on the return leg, I agree, but definitely the most saving and retaining flexibility.

I've a feeling Southern may hike the price of those Day Saves before too long - compared with normal fares they're very good value for the longer trips.

If you want flexibility both ways try East Croydon to Hedge End Off peak return £28.20 route via Barnham stopping short at Fareham. Winchester to Hedge End off peak single £4.90
The direct Winchester to Fareham train stops at Hedge End.

Alternatively a super off-peak single from Hedge End to East Croydon is £16.80 and a single from Winchester to Hedge End is £4.90 total £21.70

Train stops at Hedge End so no problems about split ticket validity

Journey time (Saturday) 2 hours 40 mins leaving Winchester at xx19 and changing at Fratton
