Is the correct answer. Has the lesser used platform been demolished then? Note I did not state that both the platforms were in regular use.

Considering a move to Memphis
Clue 5 : the town served by this station was (until the 1970s) the headquarters of one of the largest independent bus operators in the country. [ though their garage was on completely the opposite side of town ]
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

You think it likely I got off there a few days ago ?!

Ashton-under-Lyne?

An original L&Y station with an island platform, served only by Northern TOC. No idea what the original independent bus company was - "Ashton, Stalybridge & Dukinfield" Co????

Atherton is correct - but I don't think you get any points for taking 6 guesses !

I wouldn't have got it at all if it hadn't been for your generous sixth clue!

********

Clue 1
This station is now much-reduced to one platform.

Clue 3

This station was one of three in the town originally.
Now only this one survives.

martinsh is correct with Barnstaple.

Congratulations to him, and commiserations to Southern442, dzug2 & Buttsy.
