Hi,

Can anyone recommend places that can easily be accessed by rail from Bristol Temple Meads? I don't mind making connections and am looking for places which can be travelled from start to end within about 4 hours.

I am looking for things such as museums, tourist attractions (places of interest) or anything really that can be made a day of.

Any recommendations welcome.

Thanks :D

Bristol Temple Meads to York can be done in 3 hours 59 min on a direct XC service (a little faster going back) or where you thinking of 2 hours there and 2 hours back as it wasn't clear.

As York apparently has some sort of attraction which involves trains.

Don't mind travelling 4 hours there and then 4 hours back. The journey time doesn't bother me as long as it's within reason as I can easily be entertained with my iPad, it's like being at home except I get food and drink brought to me on a trolley.

Obvious suggestion time, but the museums in London are some of the greatest in the entire world and they are free. The Natural History museum is spectacular outside and in.

It would help to know what your specific interests are.

We could list many "tourist attractions" within 4 hours of Bristol.

But if you're into museums and history, and have seen the London museums mentioned above, may I suggest the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, just 3 hours away.

Have looked at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester online snd it looks worth of a visit ;) I like to visit museums and prefer those with objects ratheer than realms of text within. I want to be able to go to a museum though and easily spend a few hours there if I'm making a long trip by train.

I hadn't given any museums in London a thought, I want to go to Paddington station and Trafalgar Square one day next year, so this combined with a visit to a museum and somewheree to get something to eat would make a very good day out :)

The obvious place to visit would be Cardiff. Cardiff Castle, a few minutes walk from Central. The National Museum of Wales close by and The Museum of Welsh Life, a short bus ride away. Then there is the seaside at Barry Island, twenty odd minutes from Central by frequent train service.

If you wanted to avoid the London rush or don't fancy an intercity jaunt half way up the country, you could try heading towards the south coast. Portsmouth has the historic dockyard and a number of varying museums, journey time is roughly 2 hours 20 mins. With your 4 hour deadline you could even manage a trip to the Isle of Wight, 10 minutes from Portsmouth by Hovercraft (by far the best way to go and thoroughly cool to travel on!), or around 20 minutes by catamaran. You could travel to Southampton, a slightly shorter journey, and catch a ferry from there too. Or you could change trains at Southampton Central and head into the New Forest, which has museums and history in spades. Closer still is Salisbury with a bus link to Stone Henge as well as the historic city and cathedral.

You could easily spend a whole day at MOSI. :D
