(well it's a trip but everyone needs more alliteration in their life!)

I'm currently on board the Highland Chieftain, all the way to Inverness, which can only mean one thing (I'm going to Scotland!). I'll be updating this as I go along, but for now, I'm armed with two sandwiches, a newspaper, my laptop and 24 hours East Coast Wifi to get me through the 8 hour journey :D We're just pulling out of King's Cross now, one minute early!

I started off with an early start this morning, alarm was due to go off at 8am, but I woke up at 7:15 and couldn't sleep again, so I hauled myself out of bed then. Had a long shower as I had ample time, before getting dressed and popping into Hertford to buy a couple of sandwiches. Still running really ahead of time, I walked down to Hertford North to catch the 09:53 to Moorgate, run by 313038 and 313024, nothing changes here. Got off at Highbury and Islington, before popping over to the Victoria line to make use of my free tube journey between there and King's Cross. After grabbing a McDonalds, I waited on the footbridge above the platform, although I was tempted to go and sit down in my seat (my train was the only HST in the station :D). I boarded about 20 minutes ago, followed by everyone else, and boy is it busy! So busy that I've now got two people sitting in the seat beside me. Squashing to say the least but I think they're only going to York so I'll just wait it out.

Just flying through Finsbury Park now, weather is looking good, albeit a bit cloudy. I think I'll finish this here for now as I'm running out of things to say. I'll report back later!

Have a great time Searle :D I think you're brave to do that entire Journey in Standard Class!

I’ll pick it up here as I’m on a Scotrail Class 170 (coupled to a 158!), and using their horribly slow wifi :D

The journey wasn’t too bad in the end, the family who had two kids sat in the same seat beside me ended up going all the way to Perth, but they kept on moving seats (and checking everyone’s seat reservations about 10 times), it was obvious that they hadn’t made any reservations beforehand (they thought it would be quiet because it was an off peak journey!).

The service mainly emptied out at Edinburgh, and by Perth it was near empty, which was quite nice. I spent most of my time after Perth in the vestibule, looking out the windows (I’ll be sad when the High Speed Trains go :( ). The Highland Mainline is absolutely stunning, especially north of Pitlochry, so glad that I got to do it sooner rather than later. The evening sun seemed to be out to make everything better as well :D Just remembered that I also saw the infamous IanPooleTrains filming at Manors, so I'll make sure to give his youtube a look sometime to see if I can spot myself!

We got into Inverness about 3 minutes late, after being held at Aviemore for a late running Scotrail service running south. Grabbed a few pictures of 43239 + 43302, which had taken the 8 hour 9 minute journey incredibly well, as well as few of the Sleeper which was waiting to go south.
I made my way over to my hotel (via a gift shop that was impressively open past 8pm), which was the Ardross Glencairn, just on the other side of the river. Inverness seemed to be a lovely place, and this hotel was fitting for it. It was a small B&B, and I had grabbed a single room with shared bathroom for £38 (although I’m not convinced anyone else actually used the bathroom), well worth it. I went back into town to visit a dodgy fish and chips shop, but it turned out to be pretty cheap and tasty.

My alarm was set even earlier this morning, a lovely 5:45 wake up for me, before sticking my head under the shower to properly wake myself up, most of it went on the floor though, still haven’t got the hang of the shower heads that you can remove :( I left the hotel/B&B at 6:20, before walking to the station for the 07:04 service to Wick, up the Far North Line. I made my way up to the front of the train to sit down for the long journey up through seemingly nowhere! The line is so beautifully remote, I was taking so many pictures all the way of just absolutely nothing, however odd it seems. My favourite is the section between Forsinard and Kildonan, where there is just literally nothing for miles around (I’m sure you guys already know this because you’ve done it multiple times before :D).

We arrived into Georgemas Junction (or Georgemas Jn as it’s referred to on the signs, I can’t think of any other station that is abbreviated like that, very weird), before reversing back to Thurso, and then reversing again for travel back towards Wick, and I don’t understand this. Why don’t they run to Wick, reverse, and then back to Thurso? Seems a bit odd to reverse more times than you need to. We arrived at Wick at 11:32, bang on time, so I jumped out and made my way down to the High Street, where I stocked up on food and sweets (and a couple of postcards), before making my way back to the railway station, to find the same unit, 158715, unmoved from earlier, so I jumped back on board.

I had grabbed a copy of the timetable at Wick station, and I noticed on it that it said there was Standard Class only between Inverness, Kyle and Wick, so I pointed this out to the guard, who said that I was free to upgrade myself to First, but the plug sockets weren’t working, which sucked a little bit, but I took it regardless, so remember that if you’re planning on going up there! The journey back down south was timetabled for 4 hours 12 minutes, as opposed to 4 hours 26 minutes going north, which seemed like a startling difference, but we did stop for prolonged periods on the way up.

After briefly falling asleep somewhere, and then spilling coke on myself (so clumsy :( ), we arrived back at Inverness at 16:50, just two minutes late, which wasn’t bad as we were about 10 down at one point. I made my way off the train (no surprises there), and back into the concourse (which is a bit lifeless really). My train to Glasgow Queen Street was leaving at 17:30 on platform 3, and a train for Aberdeen was leaving on the adjacent platform 4, so I went to get a picture of it, and watched them couple a 158 to a 170 for my journey to Glasgow. When someone realised that I wasn’t actually intending to board the Aberdeen service, they said I should go back down into the concourse and wait there for the train, which seemed exceedingly illogical to me, until I realised that people were actually queuing for the platform! How civilised, I would never expect to see that in London, at least not for a long time. Instead of queuing, I went to Platform 6 to take a picture of a service departing for Ardgay, before milling around. People were let onto the platform six minutes before it was due to leave, so everyone rushed, Euston style :D I’m now on this service, just leaving Carrbridge, where we waited for seven minutes, so me and another guy promptly jumped off to grab a picture!

That’s where I’m up to now, I’m in the process of deciding what to do tomorrow. I’m staying in Ayr tonight, and I had originally planned to go down to Stanraer, tomorrow morning, but I think I might have a wonder around Ayr tomorrow morning, before going up to Glasgow. My train to Edinburgh is the 15:00 XC service, so I might get a Strathclyde Day Tripper, and just make up my plan as I go along. We’ll see!

Thank Urban Gateline, I only chose to do it in Standard because I could get it on East Coast Rewards, and First had sold out!
Tickets from somewhere on the ECML (or Hertford Loop or to King’s Lynn on FCC) are valid on London Underground between Finsbury Park/Highbury & Islington/Old Street and King’s Cross, because the Northern City Line doesn’t run at weekends. Very useful, as the next FCC service into King’s Cross was a 15 minute wait :D

Sounds great so far Searle, I like how detailed your trip report is, I don't think I could be bothered to write one to that level of detail, but it's great :D

I've done the Journey to Inverness quite alot, three times now this year! Once on Scotrail from Glasgow, once on the Scotrail Sleeper and once on the Chieftain! I too love the scenery along the way. The Journey to Wick doesn't dissapoint in that respect either!

The one time I stayed in a hotel in Inverness, I stayed in the Premier Inn, which is about a 20min walk from the station, for some reason I am averse to B&B type places, I prefer the chain hotels or luxury ones where you know roughly what to expect! The bed in the room was amazing and everything immaculately tidy, I'd definitely recommend it for anyone able to walk the mile and a bit to get to it, I'm going there again in October for £29 a night! :p

I also thought that "reversal" at Georgemas is a bit strange, but it adds to the experience I guess! Even though Inverness to Wick is a very long Journey, the changing scenery keeps your eyes glued to the Window so the time passes quickly! Wick is admittedly quite a dull station, not as nice as Mallaig! Also I struggled to find a Supermarket there, it all seems to be independant shops only in the town centre although there is a Pound shop, quite refreshing compared to Towns where big chains have just taken over!

I also only found out about declassified First Class on the return Journey, and me and my mate made good use of it, the power sockets were also not working then! I agree with someone else who posted in another thread that the Scotrail trolley service is quite good, offers a good selection and at reasonable prices unlike Rail Gourmet!

Do keep us updated on your travels Searle, it's fascinating to read others' experiences! I am going to Inverness a further 3 times this year, all on the Chieftain and in First Class, it is what I save my East Coast reward points for, and I normally book on the day the latest Advances are released so there is availability (and I doubt I'm the only one who does that, getting maximum value out of East Coast reward tickets!)

I'm just on my phone, so I'll reply later Urban Gateline, when I'm back on my laptop.

Just have one thing to say, the sun has slightly come out in Coatbridge Sunnyside!

My trip down to Glasgow was uneventful, but just as beautiful as on the way up. I got into Glasgow at 20:44, pretty sleepily as I had been up for so long (about 15 hours at that point). I made my way out of Queen Street quickly, popping into the ticket office to buy a Strathclyde Day Tripper, making the ticket woman laugh as I commented on how genius they are, scratching out the date on the ticket. I popped down to the subway to get a train to St. Enoch, as I didn’t want to walk through Glasgow in the rain, or get a bus. I knew there was a train to Ayr at 21:00, as I boarded a tram at about 20:50, so I decided to go for it and run. I didn’t really expect it to be as far as it is from St. Enoch to Glasgow Central (I bet it seemed much further with a heavy bag!), but I was committed, and just made it in time, completely out of breath though. To pass the 50 minutes to Ayr (the journey is not so enjoyable in the dark), I fired up my laptop using the power sockets that the 380’s have, to watch Sound City, the documentary about the recording studio, made by Dave Grohl, because I had been meaning to watch it for ages. 380114 ran this service (just remembered!)

The journey passed away quickly, and before I knew it, I was walking through the light drizzle at Ayr station, trying to get google maps to work on my phone, so I could find the way to my hotel. I found it alright, and after pressing on the buzzer three times, someone finally let me in, and led me through to a pub, before they led me (and my huge bag), back to the reception, jumping over it to grab the card machine. He then ran off to get the key, shouted down the corridor to me and pointed at my room instead of taking me there. Manners these days!

I’m not sure what I was expecting at £29, but the room wasn’t that great really. There were two single beds, so I immediately pushed them together, and took a shower, making use of the complimentary biscuits (although not at the same time). Got to sleep at about 11:30, after being up for about 18 hours x_x

This morning I woke up at 8am, which was a bit nicer. I had decided to scrap my plan of going to Stranraer the morning before, mainly because I realised that the Day Tripper was only valid from 0900, and the train I had planned on getting was the 0736, oops :D

I popped into Ayr to get some breakfast and a sandwich from tesco, before going back to my room and grabbing my bag, which seemed to be a lot heavier than last night, I don’t know what it’s doing when I turn my eye away >: I walked to the station and hopped on board the 0950 from Ayr to Glasgow Central, run by a 3 car 380, 380014 this time. I love the 380’s, they’re amazingly smooth, and the plug sockets are so useful, especially as my phone eats away power without even doing anything. Fortunately, I had just missed the rain too, as it starting pouring pretty hard when we left! The train quickly filled up with people going to Glasgow for the day. I noticed that the 380’s struggle to keep time on these services, we were already about two minutes down after the third station, which is odd because they’ve just come into service!

At Glasgow Central, I popped over to platform 7 to grab a Cathcarts circular, going clockwise. 314201 did the honours this time, and it was my first chance to check out the Scotrail EMU stock. I was disappointed to see that the 314’s are more similar to the 315’s, and not my loved 313, but it was still close to home! We left Glasgow Central at 10:51, and exactly 30 minutes later, we arrived back on the adjacent Platform 8, well worth it!
I still wasn’t totally certain what I wanted to do with the three hours I had, but I knew I wanted to get the remaining three Scotrail EMU’s in, which were the 318, 334 and 320, and I thought the best chance of this would be to go to Partick and do all the suburban lines from there, so I made my way down to Glasgow Central Low Level, where things got interesting!

For any of you who have been to the Low Level station at Glasgow, there are about two screens per platform, and they had about five pages each to scroll through, which they did amazingly slowly. I was extremely confused at this point as where I was going (well I knew I was going to Partick but I didn’t know what direction this was. A 320 came into Platform 17, so I jumped on, thinking that it went to Partick, but I looked on the screen on the platform, and it only displayed stations that I didn’t recognise, so I jumped back off, thinking that it was going the wrong way! Only then did I notice my mistake; I had only seen page two of the stations, and they were the stations after Partick, so the train was the right one. Absolute nightmare! :(

Fortunately it was about six minutes to the next train, so I jumped on, a bit more confident that I knew where I was going this time. 318252 took me there, which was more like the 313/317’s that I’m used to :D We got to Partick within seven minutes, so I took some pictures, waiting for the 1214 to the infamous Coatbridge Sunnyside! While I was waiting on Platform 1 (westbound), I saw that the 11:38 to Airdrie was due, but running late, and this stopped at Coatbridge SS, so I ran over and jumped on that, 318257 took me there in 29 minutes, and it was actually sunny there! Well, half sun, the sun was shining through some thin clouds :D

I hadn’t noticed before, but there had been OHLE problems at Airdrie earlier in the day, meaning that about half of the services through were cancelled (including the train I was going to get to Coatbridge), but fortunately a service back into Glasgow came eight minutes later, another 318, 318254 took me to Bellgrove, and I was cursing myself at not staying on the 320 earlier, as there seemed to be a shortage of them. I got off at Bellgrove in the hope of catching the train up to Springburn, and I noticed that it was cancelled just as the doors had closed on my previous train (curse you slow changing boards!), so I was forced to wait for the next train into Glasgow, the 12:57, which was finally a 320 for me, 320306 took me on a short hop to High Street, with the satisfying three letter code of HST, where I waited for a fast train to Dalmuir, run by 334011, completing my goal, satisfying!
It was a bit dull from here, I went up to Dalmuir, before coming back to Hyndland on 334032, before waiting for the 14:07 to Motherwell, on 320307. At Motherwell, I was treated to dual 37’s thrashing through, on a rail head cleaning service it looked like, blimey it was loud! I then caught the 15:14 XC service to Edinburgh, on 221131, so I stole the free wifi from First Class (much like I’m about to in a minute to post this!), to check up how my later trains were doing.

At Edinburgh, I jumped off and walked up the long ramp up to Waverley Bridge, and then along to the McDonalds nearby, to grab a meal (was starving by this point). On the way back I noticed that I needn’t have bothered, there was a McDonalds just in the little mall out of the station, there’s even an escalator to it! Just my luck 8(

My next service was the Loco Hauled services around the Glenrothes Loop, and 67022 turned up for it with some Mk 2 stock in tow, was great fun to put my head out of the front coach and listen to it power up. It’s quite obvious that this service struggles a lot to keep up with the DMU timings, even with the WTT about six minutes behind the PTT in places! The getaways from stations were amazingly slow, and we were about four minutes late all the way round. I especially liked the dispatch method, a good old fashioned green flag being waved.

I went all the way around the loop to Kirkcaldly, where I hopped off and crossed the platform, my speed decreasing all the way as my feet were getting tired of my huge bag! I waited for the 18:47 XC service to Aberdeen, run by another Voyager, 221141 this time. It was tempting to wait for an EC HST 25 minutes later, but I thought that it was worth putting up with the Voyager for two hours, to make sure I get into Aberdeen on time. I also invented a new game for when I’m on XC services, called “who’s been on a voyager for the longest?’ The winner today goes to the man in D20, who’s been on from Exeter St Davids to Dundee! Ouch that’s a long journey x_x
I’m writing this and watching the rest of Sound City as we speed up the East Coast, just approaching Stonehaven now. I’m planning on popping up to the first class coach in a minute, posting this and then coming back, hopefully I’ll be sneaky enough!

At Aberdeen, I’m gonna try and find a left luggage (I seem to recall there was one when I went before?), or put my bag in the First Class lounge, then run into the town, grab something for the Sleeper, before running back and jumping on. Nervous as to who I’m going to have to share with, but I probably won’t spend that much time in the berth anyway.

Thanks for the kind comments Urban Gateline, really appreciated :) I agree about the scenery, it changes a lot and all of it is really interesting! Well worth the trip I feel. I haven’t been in a hotel or anything on my own before so I had no idea what to expect. I can understand going for the big chains though, I think I’ll try it too when I next get a trip going.
Wick is a bit dull, yes, and I couldn’t find a supermarket either! If you’re referring to the ‘Original 99p Shop’ in Wick, I have some terrible news for you, it’s shut down! :( There’s also a large Poundstretcher that looks quite new, so I have a bad feeling that it put it out of business, which is really quite sad actually. Maybe it’s a common thing with the power sockets not being in use, would be nice if they were, but I can’t really complain with a free upgrade! I turned out not getting anything on the trolley service anyway, I came prepared!

I’ll do my best to keep on writing these, thank you so much for the nice comments.

Eastwestdivide, I personally think it would be a great thing, it snowing whenever you go to Snow Hill :D You learn something every day HLE13 ;) It even works the barriers at King’s Cross, without a Maltese Cross!

I’ll post a short summary to this tomorrow morning when I get back home. All it is to go now is the Sleeper down to Euston and a train back to Hertford North. Pretty sad that it’s coming to an end so quickly!

(I'm sitting outside first class, stealing their wifi and there is a guy who is SO drunk he can hardly talk properly. Scotland eh? ;)

Hahahah, this is good! I feel cheated for having spent my afternoon being scowled at by Northern's finest (not you guys on here... I wish I had seen one of you actually). I'm sitting here with an atlas just going "uh?" like a monkey at most of this - my Scottish railway geography is atrocious... I really need to make my own escapade North of the Border fairly soon. Or at all, really. In any case, you're braver than me with all those little hotels... ;) But I think I'd have spilt rather less of the coke

I can at least relate to the 67 stock from the Arriva Trains Wales 'Premier Service' thingy. It was great to stand there at stations with your head at the window and the driver at the loco door on one side and the guard, having ran up and down like a madman shutting doors (no platform staff - and people just aren't used to doors which slam!), on the other stick a green flag out the window!

Buzzers? Far too modern!

You definitely do need to have a trip up to Scotland at one point, it's lovely up there! :D Much better than Northern anyway ;) and I have no comment on my clumsiness :|

It took ages at all the stops for them to close the doors and get the green flag out and all, and then it took a while for the 67 to power up and get going as well. Although most of the commuters closed the door behind them, which was quite nice of them!

Gonna finish this up now as I'm back at home!

After getting into Aberdeen about six minutes late, I had 50 minutes until the sleeper was due to leave, and I was starving, so naturally I went on the hunt of food! I asked the person in the first class lounge if I could leave my bag with him briefly so I could run into the town to find something, but he said I couldn't and referred me to left luggage, where I'd have to pay about £4 for half an hour in it, so I was a little bit miffed as to why he couldn't just watch it :/

As some of you may know, Aberdeen station is in a shopping centre (union square?), so I went up to the restaurant section in the search of a takeaway. Fortunately, Pizza Hut said they could do a pizza in about 10 minutes, so I agreed and sat around (I read 4SRKT's trip report actually :D), waiting for a meat feast pizza and some garlic bread. It arrived extremely promptly, so I ate some there and popped back down to the station feeling pretty happy with myself.

After attempting to take a picture of the electronic boards at Aberdeen (it kept on moving as my camera got in focus >_<D, I went onto the platform with the sleeper, and found it very odd that someone was welcoming me on and asking what drink I wanted in the morning! I went into my berth (D 01), and fortunately there was no one else in there, so I put my bag on the bed and sat down. I think I also put out a snow globe of the loch ness monster as a little decoration (I had got it for my girlfriend as a semi-tacky joke gift, although it is quite sweet actually!). I went back outside to see what loco was pulling us tonight (67011, which unsurprisingly I had never been on before, as the first 67 I had was earlier in the day), before jumping back inside to wait our departure.

I watched from the window as we left Aberdeen, looking out over the coast as the full moon shone over the sea, how very poetic. After a while I popped into the lounge car to sit down with a book (Charlie Brooker's new book, had me laughing in stitches multiple times), to watch the world go by. The lounge car was empty apart from about five people, who came and went in stages. A few more people joined at Montrose and Dundee, but it was completely empty at Stonehaven and Arbroath. Fortunately we got past our last pick up point (Inverkeithing, a station that I've been to before), and no one had claimed the other bed in my berth, which I was extremely pleased about. The whole thing was very quiet, but I'm not sure too many people have any reason to travel to London on a Wednesday evening!

We arrived into Edinburgh on time at 00:37, after moving over to Platform 2 of Haymarket, before then back over to Platform 19 of Waverley, where the Fort William section arrived pretty soon after (pulled by 67007), which went on to the back of us, and then finally the Inverness section (pulled by 67004), and then 90025 was put on the very front. At this point, two girls who had joined at Dundee were hanging around, so I talked briefly to them, they were going down to Reading festival.

After talking to them for a while, they went off to the Lounge Car, so I was left to look out the window as we sped towards Carstairs junction, and then Carlisle. After Carlisle, I sat in my berth for a while, and fell asleep by mistake (I'm useless at staying awake it seems), and then I woke up just north of Crewe, about an hour later, feeling exceptionally groggy x_x

After watching people alight at Crewe (a surprising amount really), I went back to my berth to read some more Charlie Brooker. We were about 15 minutes at this point, and because of this, we waited just south of Stafford for a fast running Virgin Pendolino, before popping onto the fast line for a quick run down the Trent Valley, before waiting again at Rugby for another Pendolino. The rest of the run down to Euston was perfect, getting green signals all the way. It was raining at this point, and I was standing by the window. At one point, we passed a train going on the down fast at a closing speed of 200+ mph, and this meant that a huge load of water sped in through the window and soaked me, nightmare! :(

We arrived into Euston at 07:42, so I went down to the tube section, to see how much money was on my Oyster. I was expecting to have about £2, so I was extremely surprised to find out I actually had -25p! Being thoroughly confused as to why this was, I put on another fiver, before making my way down to get the tube to Finsbury Park, where I was expecting this to all start as it had begun, on a 313 to Hertford North, but it seems that the fun was only beginning!

I got to Finsbury Park and bought a NR ticket to Hertford, before going up on to the platform, awaiting the 08:15, which was a semi fast train. It turns out that this had been cancelled, along with every other service up the Hertford Loop Line, because of a person hit by a train at Cuffley. The 08:00 was just arriving, 6 late, but I was advised not to get it by station staff, because it wouldn't get through Cuffley. I was a bit baffled at this point, being half asleep as I made my way back down onto the tube to Tottenham Hale, where I arrived about 10 minutes later.

Fortunately I was allowed back through the barrier, and I was planning on catching the 08:25 to Hertford East. I was already a little bit ****ed off (how ironic that I'm getting annoyed at trains after going on holiday on them :D), and it just got worse as everything was getting delayed out of Liverpool Street, so my train was getting later and later. There were also workers on the track just out of Tottenham Hale, which I'm certain was not safe, as there's a train in each direction every 5 minutes! My train eventually arrived at 08:36, fortunately it was 8 cars, otherwise I would have been seriously angry at Greater Anglia, they're not exactly in my good books already (find them pretty damn useless at most points). 317512 + 317886 dropped me off in Hertford 9 minutes late, at 09:10, to mark the end of my journey :(

I've now put all the journey into my RailMiles, so I can give you some statistics ;)

In the three and a bit days I was away (Monday to Thursday morning), I did 2024 miles, which took me 39 hours, 56 minutes at an average speed of just over 50mph. My biggest movement was unsurprisingly the Highland Cheiftain at 580 miles in 8 hours 10 minutes, followed by the Caledonian Sleeper, 530 miles in 9 hours 59 minutes. Not bad for just over £100 spent on train tickets!

Turns out I had so little on my Oyster because I didn't renew my railcard discount on it, and I had been to South Kensington the week before. It charged me £2.70 each way, as opposed to £1.80. How was I meant to know I had to renew my railcard discount on it, no one told me that

Thanks for reading everyone, sorry if the last installment wasn't as good as the others. I'm expecting it to be because I'm pretty sleepy now, and it wasn't all that interesting!

Thanks for all the kind comments too, really makes writing a huge report like this, totally worth it :D

S Yorks, usually
Rooms in pubs, like yours in Ayr, can be very variable. I was in one in Chester-le-Street, where breakfast was nowhere to be seen, and nor were any staff. Turns out they all went home at night, and sent someone round with a clingfilm-wrapped tray with grotty cereal, UHT milk, and a greasy croissant, who turned up half an hour after they should have done.

Really enjoying reading all your updates. I would guess that the reversal at Georgemas happens because Georgemas to Thurso is less distance for a double run than Georgemas to Wick.

As for a supermarket in Wick, there is one. If you go out of the station, turn right and follow to the end of the road then turn right again you will come to a Co-op on your right. You can see it as you enter Wick on the train, its about a 5 minute walk.

eastwestdivide, I can imagine that it could have been a lot worse, yes. I suppose I should be glad it wasn't as bad as that! :D

Birdbrain, that could be true, although I'm not sure it was that much difference? Oh well :D

And ahh, I went straight into town by turning left when I got to Wick, that'll be where I went wrong ;)

Just remembered about going under the Forth Rail Bridge on the sleeper, I've been over in the day quite a few times, but it was even better at night, with it all being lit up inside, so glad I got to see it at night. The Tay Bridge was amazing as well, I cannot believe how long it is! Took a good two minutes to get over it, really very impressive :D

Just finished reading the rest of your Update Searle...sounds amazing :D Especially the views! That is something that will rival my trip to Fort William on the Sleeper in October! ;) You're lucky that nobody booked into the other bed in your Berth though, I guess that will not be the case for me as I have booked a bargain berth for £39 so I bet Scotrail will stick someone else in there too!

I'm guessing you probably fell asleep earlier than expected because you got tired from the all the Journeys you made, that's common especially if you have a busy itinerary to follow, also when it gets dark there's little to see anyway so that makes sleeping the best thing to do!

My Journey up to Inverness on the Chieftain was good, First Class was definitely worth it due to the cooked meal and Sandwiches and the number of alcoholic drinks I had off the Trolley throughout the Journey! I stayed in the station hotel this time (Royal Highland). A very nice building but unfortunately the fire alarm went off 3 times during the night so I missed out on alot of sleep and the staff were not very attentive!

On the way back the next day I took the 07:55 Highland Chieftain again in First Class, very good breakfast and the train ran to time perfectly just so that I could beat the Peak Oyster timings by touching in at 15:58 at KGX!!! :D

I'm useless at staying awake, even if I'm sitting at home and I've been doing that all day! I've fallen asleep while on the phone to someone as well before :/

I'd imagine you'd get less luck on the sleeper to Fort William, they seem to generally be really busy, as the Aberdeen ones aren't as much! Quite jealous of that breakfast too, I'm still to sample EC's breakfasts! :D

Just for completeness (and for my own satisfaction), I'm just gonna post a couple of the photos that I took :D

I agree.

For anyone not so familiar with the line, the first two of Searle's pictures are taken from either end of the Pass of Drumochter, the summit of the Highland mainline.

The first is taken from just before Dalnaspidal Lodge (a timing point) looking north west towards the summit. The rightmost of the three rounded hills/mountains is known as the Sow of Atholl and the pass is just to the right of it.
The second is taken from just past Balsporran Cottages (the white building) looking south back towards the pass. The rounded hill behind the cottages is known as the Boar of Badenoch and the pass is just to the left of it. The actual summit is inbetween the places those two images were taken.

I have just noticed that you got significantly more sliced potatoes than I did on Wednesday, a larger omelette, and your toast was not burnt. <(

Haha oops! I don't normally have much luck with food on EC, always seem to pick the same rotation out and get the Quiche on the outward Journey to Inverness! Would have loved to try the curry or jacket potato with seafood! You're right though the breakfast was good though! :)

Just read this report and it sounds like it was an incredible trip. Well detailed, and I'd agree chain hotels are more reliable than independant ones, especially if abroad. Loved the photos, and I'm dying to do the Highland Chieftain again. I did it in Standard when it was still IC70 seats some years ago (I know it was 43006 and 43008, but no date known as I have lost a LOT of notes ) and it was much better after York.

Glad to see you had a good trip, definitely jealous! Was nice to know where everywhere was, and my trip to Aberdeen was December 2008 when the station had a lot of work going on there, so didn't know about the shopping mall and Pizza Hut. Nice to know about it though :)

Not done a berth on the sleeper for years but you were lucky not to have to share. I always do it seated sleeper, but after the last experiences of it on 2012's ALR I wouldn't do it again. The game on the Voyager is a funky one, I'll have to remember that for my next lengthy Voyager trip. Hopefully next year I'll have achieved the long-standing goal of doing Aberdeen to Penzance throughout :)
