The 9F Cock O' North stored at Grosmont has been under restoration for its overhaul. It had been locked up in a shed for a whist the pain job had been done and other jobs, With the door locked and 'Private No Entry' wrote on a door. and the shutters at the rear locked and closed. Today the 9F was pulled out by a shunter and we saw a major a difference it was painted in BR Lined Black

Am I missing something here? Wasn't 92214 built by BR? Quite honestly they could paint it pink and call it Doris for all I care. We've got more than enough 9Fs to go round. Obsessing about liveries seems pointless to me, it's only a coat of paint.

As long as it's not painted pink and called Doris, ...... :)
Lined black = absolutely right IMO.

OK never lined in BR service, but it suits her. As to the secret, well not a good one. The NELPG Deviation shed was,and still is,open to the public, you can stand at the north end of the shed and look along. People in and looking at the ongoing job two weeks ago whe I was inspecting the shed.....you may not have been able to tell it was being lined out though, as the public area is very end on to the lines. Stuart must have visited before any of the volunteers had opened up, they aren't there all day every day, but when they are the public have access.

i like the paint and the name.. too many people frothing and having a fit over the name and livery is stupid, it looks good, not everything has t be authentic all of the time.

What is the significance of the big blue spot beneath cab side number? Route limitation or speed limitations ??

route limitation??? sounds very western region though that does... unless the engine was at somepoint allocated to the WR?

The blue spot was I beleive a WR axle loading indicator.

That is correct. Blue i believe is more or less a go anywhere one. Red is restrictions on routes. The big Tank engines had this like 56xxs etc.

Double Red as on the Kings are even stricter limitations.

Also a Letter within the Spot is the power classifcation as well.

So Blue is a 'go-anywhere' indicator? Is this why the magnificent Notwork Rail folk dont allow 9F's on most routes? Heard something about wearing out rails on short radius even though centre wheel is flangeless.

Changing thread [slightly] what a sad sight 46235 is lost in ThinkTank, cant even get a good shot of it now with some much clutter and obstructions. Shame it cant be restored [500K +] and put out where it belongs. Does look super in Brunswick!

ps it too has a Big Blue spot on it so the thread is tenuous but undeniable??

The non-flanged wheels conflict with the check-rails on some modern pointwork, or something along those lines. Can't remember where I read that though.

Aren't the check rails set slightly high nowadays?

Always glad to here of this or similar restoration projects, dont really care what livery it is painted in.
Would not be terribly keen on pink, but if the owners did paint it pink, well it is their engine ! And it is a change readily reversed.

I seem to remember a fuss on the West Somerset Railway about the livery applied to an engine.
IIRC those writing to complain received a very polite letter advising them that if they donated enough towards the NEXT overhaul, that they would be consulted about the next livery.:D

BR/Railtrack/Network Rail have opposed the use of 9Fs on many routes. The reasons for this seem to have varied over the years, and I can't help feeling it stems from the 'No Steam' period of BR when obstacles were invented to prevent the use of steam.

Admitted it does seem odd when one considers how many 9F are in use, Even Star spend a year or so on KWVR last century, Black Prince at home on West Somerset and 'Doris' on NYMR plus that other one that escapes me on NNR.
Sure if they did damage to track then these private lines, then they would not want to use them ... too much. Admitted they are long brutes but cant see a check rail getting much abuse over-and-above what its designed for!! Something that big must bend a tiny bit anyway I suspect but not enough by looks o0f things for NR.
Im no expert so forgive me if my b0ll0cks0meter has peaked when its should not have.

What I would love to see would be a Brush Type 4 in the lovely pastel pink livery in which I regularly saw them on Crewe-Carlisle runs in the early 60s. If anyone had a colour picture, I would love it. Let pink claim its rightful place in railway folklore!

.

Not quite - Blue had a fairly wide availability, but Yellow had even wider availability, and "uncoloured" could go almost anywhere.

The check rails on the main line have been raised higher than the running rails therefore there is the risk of the flangeless centre driver riding up on the check and derailing the loco

I think (but don't quote me) the problem may be to do with the raised checking arrangement on cast manganese diamond crossings. The KWVR, WSR, NYMR, NNR et c. will not have many of them.

That was probably 88. There was much uproar about it being "vandalised" when the owners wanted to paint it S&DJR Blue when in reality not 7Fs ever wore it and only ever wore black.

The uproar was so much it was painted blue!
