Future of Class 315

Personally I'd just scrap the 315s now; old stock that really doesn't create a great image for british railways. Realistically and unfortunately they'll be done up and still be used, but I'm a little fed up of all this old stock that is transferring around our rails.

If the 315's could help see off the Northern Pacers any quicker then I'd have no problem with them being done up and re-used.

Indeed. I wasn't clear but the main target of my post were the ex-NSp 142s with seats that appear to be made of balsa wood!

I thought they were earmarked for South Wales?

Also are 315s not classed as Pacers then?

Enthuisasts have "earmarked" the 315s for South Wales
"Pacers" refers solely to class 140-144, which are based on bus bodies mated to a modified, powered, four wheel freight wagon chassis. They have 15m long coaches

The 315s are much much older design, being part of the "1972 design"; BR's first "modern" EMU design, often reffered to as the "PEP" design. This family also includes 313 (dual voltage 3 carriage, currently used by FCC, Southern (with pantograph stripped off) and Network Rail), 314 ( AC only, 3 carriage, ScotRail in the SPT area) and Merseyrails 507 and 508 fleet. They all share a 20-m carriage design. There's also some carriages of this design used in SWT's Class 455/8 subclass; this is because the 508s were originally 4-carriage and they were reused when the class was reduced to 3-car for use on Merseyrail. The 315s are 4-car, AC-only.

The latest Sewta consultation states that the emu's for the Cardiff Valleys will be class 313/315's so it isnt just us enthusiasts.

In fact some of the AM's in Cardiff have kicked up a bit of a fuss about wales getting cast off's from London.

In fact some of the AM's in Cardiff have kicked up a bit of a fuss about wales getting cast off's from London.

I know the Welsh Government's business case mentioned using them, I therfore assumed that it was agreed when electrification was given the go ahead, thanks for the clarification.
