Manchester Victoria Query

I arrived at Manchester Victoria one afternoon last week and on arrival went up to McDonalds for something to eat. After about 10 or 15 minutes, I went down the stairs and as expected was asked to display my ticket, which I did. This has happened on more than one occasion obviously and I often wonder what would happen if I wasn't actually using the train but went into McDonalds to eat and left via the same exit. As I hadn't used a train, it wouldn't be necessary for me to show a ticket.

It seems a strange system that they have in place at Victoria and it'd probably make more sense for ticket checks to take place on the bridge, rather than at the foot of the stairs to the arena/McDonalds. Is it simply down to inspectors to be completely aware of who is entering McDonalds/Arena through the concourse (rather than having just left an arriving train) so as to not ask them to display tickets when they're leaving?

Is that the McDonalds on the upstairs concourse that also has the large JD Williams call centre and the booking office windows for the arena ?

That's right. I wasn't aware of a call centre being up there but the booking office windows for the arena are there, yes.

Known issue for years but they cant close the door at the moment as its required for arena access to the car park. When the station refurbishment currently underway is complete the entrance will be on the concourse side of the ticket gates rather than the platform side accessed from the new mezzanine level.

I didn't even consider the station refurbishment, which is bizarre as it seems to be in full flow now. Obviously it makes sense for them to solve these issues now that this work is taking place.

As well as a blockade said to be taking place this December to start OHL work at the station.

I've frequently walked through the station via the Arena access as the most efficient way of getting from A to B. Each time I've passed through the ticket check point with all the rail passengers I've just told the staff I've walked through from the far side of the station. Never had any difficulty in getting straight through, indeed I've never actually had to break my stride in the process.

Similar issue at platform 1 at Piccadilly, where there is often a manual ticket inspection at the concourse end of the platform. Again, never had to break my stride when passing through as I've told them I've come from Square One.
