We are very lucky to have the license fee IMHO. If everything on TV, radio and the web was commercially funded then we'd be in a far worse situation - and that's even after taking into account views that the BBC is politically biased on certain things, or out of touch on others.

It's still better than not having it.

Here here. I moan every year when I have to pay the bill but I only have to turn over to ITV for ten minutes to remind me why the licence fee funding of the BBC should remain.

And the likes of ITV are limited as to how many minutes of adverts they can show per hour (I think it's 9 minutes), where as channels owned and aired by the likes of Sky and Virgin are not. I recorded the Top Gear special recently as it was shown on Dave, and they had 3 ad breaks an hour, all 7 or 8 minutes long!

Mind you, it's still better than what you get in the USA, where it seems they go on an ad break every 5 minutes or so!

Actually all TV broadcasters are limited in the amount of adverts. The maximum is 12 minutes per hour. There is also a daily limit of 168 minutes (average 7 min/hr) for ITV franchises, Channel 4 and Channel 5, or 216 minutes (average 9 min/hr) for everyone else. It goes without saying that trailers and other continuity do not count towards these limits.

ITV in particular have for the last few years been selling no advertising at all between 00.30 and 06.00, so they can make their primetime adverts longer (usually right up to the limit of 12 min/hr) without going over the daily cap.

Regarding American television, it seems there is no general limit, although programmes aimed at children have a limit of 12 min/hr on weekdays and 10½ min/hr at the weekend.

I won't watch ITV these days, its not just the adverts though. Years ago ad breaks tended to be every twenty minutes but the quality of the output was much better. These days it's just crap, dumbed down TV aimed at a certain sector of the market. On the extremely rare occasions that something might interest me I won't usually bother because I know the first advert will appear within ten minutes and thus won't hold my attention. Very sad to see a once decent channel reduced to the crap it has become.

Adverts are a marginal factor. There's much more to the BBC funding model than just "not having adverts". And adverts have their place on commercial TV.

Furthermore, anyone who watches commercial TV "as live" and hence can't fast-forward through ad breaks needs their head looking at IMO. Obviously there are exceptions where watching live is desirable. (And not everyone has PVR equipment).

Indeed, the Independent on Sunday has just sacked it's entire arts department (including the fantastic Simon Price) in favour of a 'digest' of the other paper's reviews

I have a subscription for The Independent and were that not the case I would not buy the IOS at £2.20 or whatever the recently raised cover price is.

Come to think of it I pay £5 per week for the whole lot which saves 60% off the cover price - any more and I'd walk.

I only wish B&H did such bountiful subscriber offers :p

Do ITV show any advertisements in the late night hours when some gambling (roulette ?) is being shown ?

I think you are mixing ITV up with Channel Five, they show the roulette.

In Scotland ITV (STV) just have nightscreen which is more like a radio show -ie cheap :p
