Is the only permitted route between these two stations via Blackburn?

I get the train from Bolton to Preston everyday as part of my commute and there's a guy who everytime he buys a ticket on board gets a Darwen to Preston return yet does the same Bolton-Preston fTPE train as I in both directions. I appreciate he may well have another ticket but the fact he buys this everyday leads me to think he may have found a cheaper way to do the same route as me.

Yes, it's via Blackburn is the only valid route. Bolton is a routeing point for Darwen but not valid for journeys to Preston as it fails the fares rule.

If he does that journey regularly, he'll soon get a Guard who is on this forum, who will educate him of the validity

Bromley Cross - Preston is valid via either route.
