Irish Rail fares

I'm trying to figure out what the rail leg of a trip round the West of Ireland is going to cost me. I'm going from Galway to Limerick then on from there (after a few hours) to Cork. The IE website doesn't seem to give any fares for this journey. Does anyone have any idea? The date is October 23rd.

The Irish Rail website is still quite poor for fares - they have a thorough guide to them online - however these only cover Dublin-based tickets, not those involving multiple lines / non-Dublin journeys! The cost of an Adult Day Single from Galway-Limerick is €21.50 as some guidance. There used to be a form on the website where you could request point-to-point fares, alas I can't find it.

(Galway's a brilliant city by the way, thoroughly worth a few hours exploring. Galway-Gort and Mallow-Cork is rather scenic too, from Gort-Limerick-Junction-Mallow though is somewhat mundane.)

Thanks! Could I do it as a Galway-Cork single and just break the journey in Limerick or do Irish rules now allow that like they would here? If not then I just need the Limerick-Cork single and I'm all good. And yeah, I'm spending the night in Galway. I'd be interested to know if there's any easy way to get out and see some of the coastline around there.

Good point you raised - I asked about that when I was in Dublin on Sunday and was told breaks are NOT permitted - i.e. if you bought a ticket from Galway-Athenry you couldn't alight at Oranmore; however since for Galway-Cork most of the time you'd need to change at Limerick City (AKA Colbert station) to actually get to Junction for the train to Cork I'm not sure what happens, as there are some direct Galway-Junction trains too! Might be worth firing off an email - I'd be interested to know the result: I was pretty surprised when I was told if I bought a ticket from say Bray-Howth across Dublin I couldn't get off at all there. Very odd set up.

Yes, you are correct - no break of journey on Irish point to point tickets. I was pulled at Drogheda when I got off the local service from Dublin with a Dublin - Belfast priv single. My intention was to get on a later Enterprise service.

My ticket was allegedly valid for three days so I assumed it was valid for break of journey - wrongly in this case. The boy on the gate was brand new & let me follow my booked itinerary.

On a later trip with a friend (no railway discount) he was able to buy an advance ticket on the day at the station BO from Limerick to Galway for 10€. I'm not sure if that was a special offer as the line was not long open.

P. 7 of the Conditions of Carriage document sets out the situation with regard to break of journey.

It doesn't apply to online tickets (which are specific for a particular time of train) and, I understand, doesn't apply in the Dublin suburban area.

Broke a journey on an InterCity route in 2012 without any issue; in fact the ticket was checked as I waited at the door to alight.

It will be cheaper to get separate tickets.

You can take a break journeys once your are inline with the following.

8.1 Except as may be specified in the publications and notices of and applicable to Iarnród Éireann, the holder of an single ticket may break his or her journey at intermediate stations on any route for which the ticket is valid within the period of validity of the ticket.

8.2 Except as may be specified in the publications and notices of and applicable to Iarnród Éireann, the holder of an return ticket may break his or her journey at intermediate stations on any route for which the ticket is valid, provided the journey is completed within the same calendar day, except where the timetable does not permit, in which latter case the journey must be completed on the next available service.
