I don't think it is!

I just think its a waste of money if they are going to build a massive, unstaffed, temporary-looking pile of concrete. Only my opinion

Worst stations - I go through several every day!!
Top of the list must be "The Hole" - aka Birmingham New Street. I know they're spending a lot of dosh on it, but you can't polish a turd.

Rugby comes next - it's too far to walk into the town when you have a PNB there.

Cheddington ( I know, where??) is next. It's a station in the middle of nowhere, serving nowhere in particular, with nothing and no-one there.

Northampton is next on the list - due to the fact that to get to the top of the temporary footbridge requires a sherpa with oxygen and hot drinks halfway up.

And another station that I detest is Newport. Not one I visit frequently, thank christ. It was revamped at a not inconsiderable expense to NR, but it still serves a vile city that has vile people in it. Not the best place to walk round late at night, Newport.

With regard to Cheddington it is stated that "It's a station in the middle of nowhere etc" But so are lots of stations one that comes to mind is Berney Arms but no one has mentioned Berney arms.

I think Berney Arms is SO in the middle of nowhere that it stands out as being charming

Cheddington doesn't seem that small - it got 66902 people last year, which isn't bad for a village station.

I've heard that the Berney Arms pub at, well, Berney Arms has "temporarily" closed; can any locals confirm that this is the case?

Hopefully it won't be permanent as it's a splendid, slightly eccentric, place - and there will be even less there now: windmill; river; footpath, er, that's it....

Not looked through the whole thread to see if it has been mentioned but I hate St. John's just outside of Lewisham.

When I used to go to uni near New Eltham the train up always used to by pass Lewisham to St. John's where I had to change. Horrible little island station in the middle of nowhere. Made even more frustrating by the fact you can see the platforms of Lewisham but you still had to wait for a train to get there.

Not a station I would particularly feel safe at during darkness either.

Technically my nearest NR station (by a matter of feet) though I have zero need for it.

Not sure there are any services these days which non-stop Lewisham but which stop at St Johns. There are lots which do the opposite as only 2 of the 6 roads out of Lewisham pass St Johns platforms, and there are some Hayes trains which are fast from London Bridge to Ladywell, avoiding both.

The fast spur to Ladywell is one of those which allways appears to need a visit from the weedkilling train.

I have no particular one at the moment; I just hate stations where there's poor lighting and nowhere that seems 'safe' to stand or sit if you're waiting for another train or to be picked up by a taxi - especially when it's dark!

And I just don't like the underground stations at all; those tube stations in London creep me out, I try to get in and out as fast as possible.

It was always pleasing when I lived at Lower Sydenham and I used to get the fast train that ran fast from LB to Ladywell.

I think the 18 minute journey was only cut down by about 4 minutes, but it felt a Hell of a lot quicker.

Motherwell - For being on the WCML and serving many local services it is a dire depressing station with run down looking buildings that can be doing with bringing into the 21st century.

Hartlepool - Only one platform in operation these days with one closed and just looks pretty dismal to boot.

A few for me:

3. Northampton

Changing soon but just a completely inadequate building, not enough through platforms for the services that stop there and the area between it and town is a wasteland, especially the old yard.

I'll agree with you on the building at Northampton - it's very poor though not for much longer, but there's no issue with the number of through platforms (3 for those who don't know the station).

Generally there's a 20 min frequency north and south - 3 platforms is ample to cover that. Even if the frequency were every 10 mins, the number of through platforms would be fine.

And to be pedantic, the area between the station and the town centre is Black Lion hill (where you've got some of the old castle walls), Marefair which has got Sol Central and various pubs and restaurants on and Gold Street which is the start of the 'shopping' area - so I'm not sure which bit you think's a "wasteland"............

Manchester Piccadilly, simply down to the aggressive, knuckle-dragging G4S staff on the overbridge who seem to delight in singling out the passengers with the most luggage for extra ticket checks!

I'm not denying that RPI checks are needed, but a little bit of customer service training wouldn't go amiss (not that I'd expect G4S to invest in such things)... Ticket barriers tend to be far more polite and courteous than G4S's finest!

Totally agree about G4S. And, as we have seen on countless threads on these forums, being accused of 'acting suspiciously' or 'fare evasion' by the G4S gestapo for taking an 'unusual' route' from platforms to station exit. Same applies to Manchester Victoria.
