Sorry to be a pain but my connection at either end was very tight so I never got to check the unit number :(

Could anyone check for me what unit worked Friday 26 July's 0903 Birmingham New St-Derby? (1S37 0520 Plymouth-Edinburgh, terminated at Newcastle)

TIA :)

All you need to do on a XC voyager is note the coach number above the entrance doors on the inside, if its xxx01 to xxx34 then that gives you 220001 to 220034, and if its numbered xxx69 to xxx91 then (once you take 50 away from the number) it gives you the unit 221119 to 221141.

And then search for it later online, none of that maths required ;)

Or even better still, go onto the wifi landing page, train number (or set number if on HST) in top right corner.

There is also the method of connecting to XC's on-board Wifi, where the unit number is displayed in the right-hand corner of their home page.

Both those methods involve firing up a computer/smartphone, mine involves a 1 second look and 2 seconds (if your thick) doing a simple sum in your head.

Obviously mental arithmetic (even simple ones) are beyond some people.

Or add 50 to actually give 119-141 ;)

Of course, as you rightly omitted, 221142 and 221143 are slightly special cases :)

Actually, it is for some people, quite a lot of people in actual fact. What point are you trying to make?

I think he's probably trying to say that as it is an essential skill in life, it is a shame that a large proportion of the population cannot do these things in their head.

I was about to say that then one gets to xxx94 and gets stumped.

Well it's true that some people can't do maths. I have a friend in his mid-twenties who can understand the concept of halves, thirds and quarters but not fifths and sixths. A simple question of dividing a pizza cut into 6 pieces amongst 3 people stumped him.

I like to think that people on this forum are somewhat more clued up about the world
