Okay, so do pieces of legislation, such as the National Railway Byelaws and the Rail Regulation Act 1844 apply to heritage railways? I'm thinking railways such as the North Norfolk Railway and the Severn Valley, though other examples of course welcome.

Not the National Rail byelaws. But they may have their own byelaws.

I see no reason why the various Regulation of Railways Acts would not apply.

Any offences would be dealt with the local Police force and not BTP.

I know this to be the case on most, however not all, preserved railways.

The BTP certainly turned out to a trespass incident on the GCR, alongside the local Police, although they weren't specifically requested.

And BTP may well investigate any offences as a result of an accident (such as NYMR shunting incident).
However for theft type offences the local non BTP force is the most appropriate.

I know when they have had problems on lynch bridge on the Nvr, it's the local police that did the charges under the BTC act of 1948.
