Any stations you know that are operated by a TOC that they don't generally serve?

E.g. Burton upon Trent (Operated by EMT-generally only served by XC)

Lockerbie ~ run by ScotRail but only TPE & Virgin use the station. That said it is not uncommon for the sleeper to stop there for unscheduled crew changes ~ the office would be closed then I think too?

This question comes up every few months. The common denominator is nearly always XC. They don't operate any stations, even if they are the only service operator, because although they cover a high route mileage they still wouldnt have enough stations to justify employing the small number of ststion staff they'd need.

So their franchise specifically states that they would not operate stations.

Outside XC there are a few anomalies caused by routes changing TOC without the follow up transfer of stations, a good example of this would be Dean and Mottisfont & Dunbridge which are awaiting transfer from FGW to SWT...

Manea, Willington, Narborough, Hinckley, Wilnecote, Water Orton, Coleshill Parkway, South Wigston, Mottisfont and Dunbridge, Dean, Lockerbie, are all operated by TOCs other than those that serve it.

Southend Airport and Glasgow Prestwick airport are managed by non-TOCs, as well as all Network Rail managed stations.

Fishguard Harbour is owned by the Fishguard & Rosslare Railways & Harbours Company/Stena Line.
Prestwick International Airport is is owned by Glasgow Prestwick International Airport Ltd.

Awaiting Confirmation on the Ownership of Liverpool South Parkway. May be owned by MerseyRail.

Believe Southend Airport may be owned by Eddie Stobarts Company, but awaiting Confirmation.

All Heathrow Stations owned formerly by BAA. Now owned by Heathrow Airport Holdings.

Are they actually planning on transferring the stations? I'm guessing it would happen at the end of the GW franchise?

Just booked the ferry from Fishguard to Rosslare for next month ~ looking forward to it.

The days when HST's were regulars.

It was in the cancelled GW franchise ITT, the text is quoted (by me!) in the other thread linked to earlier by SussexSpotter. No reason to think it won't happen once the franchising problems are sorted out.

You can also add Burton-on-Trent to that list (managed by EMT). The odd one out of this list is Manea, as at all the others XC is the only TOC that operates trains that pass through the station, whereas Manea also sees EMT and, weirdly, Greater Anglia trains pass through the station. Does anyone know why GA do not stop at Manea?

MerseyRail do serve Liverpool South Parkway though :P

I can confirm Southend Airport station is owned by Stobart Group, the owners of Southend Airport itself.

Heathrow Airport Holdings is the new name of BAA ;)

Another good one is Dunbar (operated by East Coast), as the only station in Scotland not operated by ScotRail or a non-TOC operator.

Stations can transfer mid franchise too, Chiltern slowly took over running of Moor Street, Solihull, Dorridge, Warwick and Leamington Spa from Central Trains over the course of a few years. I think a couple came when Central Trains became London Midland, but others were mid franchise and the staff at those stations were given the choice between transferring to Chiltern or being found alternative employment at Central.

Sounds like a load of nonsense really... Take Hinckley for example. The only TOC that serves the station is XC, and yet its said to be managed by EMT. What difference does it make to how many staff are needed which TOC staffs it?

The running of Dorridge and Solihull taken over by Chiltern Railways from London Midland 12/12/2010.

The running of Birmingham Moor Street, Hatton, Lapworth, Leamington Spa and Warwick taken over by Chiltern Railways from Central Trains 01/03/2002.

The running of Bicester Town and Islip taken over by Chiltern Railways from First Great Western 22/05/2011.

(Information from 'Rail' and Franchises website, and as shown on Network Rail Timetable Stations page).

Warwick Parkway is an odd one. It's operated by Chiltern, as you't expect, but also owned by Chiltern instead of Network Rail.

From the Department of Transport "Chiltern Railways became the first UK operator to own and build a new station when Warwick Parkway opened in October 2000".

Gatwick Airport moved from Network Rail to the Southern Franchise 29/01/2012 and Fenchurch Street is being considered for moving From Network Rail to the New Franchise to replace Essex Thameside (c2c).

Whereas am I right in thinking that Reading may transfer to Network Rail once the rebuild is complete? (Would certainly explain why all the new station signage is NR standard).

At privatisation there were hardly any stations (maybe none at all - I can't think of any!) where XC was the only TOC to provide service. So XC did not need to operate any stations.

The breakup of Central Trains in 2008 created the situation where XC provides the only service at the stations mentioned, but somebody probably decided that there was no point in giving XC the stations too, as XC would then have to set up a new organisation to run them. Instead they were left with the other TOCs that took pieces of Central Trains and could add these stations to their existing organisations.

Possible. Will need to research via Network Rail and Franchise websites.

For starters what would they do for sickness and holiday cover? They wouldn't have any other staff nearby to draft in.

It would also be inefficient for the TOC to have all the 'management overheads' of managing a few stations located a long way from each other. Far easier to leave it to the largest TOC in the area.

Gatwick Airport up until last year was operated by Network Rail, but is now operated by "Gatwick Express" - the only station officially operated by them - though of course it is ran by Southern - but thats all for another day.
