FRONTLINE police officers believe crime is rising but fewer offences are being reported and investigated because of cutbacks and a lack of faith in the justice system.

The damning verdict flies in the face of statistics, released last month, which show a sharp drop in overall crime.

They say soft sentences imposed on offenders deter people from reporting crime and many 999 calls are not dealt with due to job cuts.

Crime in England and Wales is at its lowest level for more than 30 years, according to the Office for National *Statistics.

But Steve White, vice chairman of the Police Federation, told the Sunday Express: “The ONS portrays a picture of reported crime but we believe a lot of crime still goes unreported. Historically recessions have always produced an increase in crime. We would be surprised if in fact the real level of crime is not rising.”

Since the Coalition came to power, 11,500 police jobs have been cut, reducing the number of officers in England and Wales to 132,235.

Home Secretary Theresa May is pushing through reforms which will cut 28,400 jobs by 2015.

Mr White said: “Our officers are not saying they are less busy than they used to be because there is much less crime. They are at full stretch and because the perception of the public is that the police are at full stretch, they are less inclined to ring to report, say, the theft of their lawnmower.”

Mr White added that fewer people are reporting offences to get a crime reference number to collect on their insurance because fewer can afford cover.

In addition, just under a third of police stations in England and Wales have closed or are due to close, making it harder to report crimes.

Shadow Justice Secretary Sadiq Khan said: “Cuts to the police meaning crimes aren’t investigated, or cautions being given out wrongly for serious offences, will see the law-abiding majority reluctant to report crimes, which would be a disaster for our criminal justice system.”

A Home Office spokesman said: “Recorded crime is down by more than 10 per cent under this Government. At the same time the independent Crime Survey for England and Wales, which reports crime as experienced by the public, shows crime is at its lowest level since records began.”

Which could easily be explained by police job cuts meaning individual officers have more crime to deal with leading to a perception that crime is increasing.

If I may bring it back to the thread (Eagle is clearly wasting his time, as evidenced by the ignorant replies) I have noticed that the pleas for info from police are often (usually) posted long after the event. This tells me one thing. They have a suspect and are merely doing a tidying up exercise in seeing whether there are any other witnesses who have not yet come forward.

Otherwise it does not make sense as you would expect the CCTV images in these cases to be published ASAP (like the next day) while memories are still fresh.

I included that 'Express' news report not as an ignorant reply to yours by the way but in some sort of defence, and what sparked me commenting on this thread in the first place.....something I read a couple of months ago! I should have probably made that more clear.....

I'm not saying what you said is wrong.....i'd just like to know more information that is all, as it is the first time i've heard of these 'ONS' unreported crime stats!

They're not new, they've been going over 30 years. Formerly known as The British Crime Survey, the results do get reported and discussed widely in the media when they're published. Nowadays it's known as The Crime Survey for England and Wales, as Scotland does its own separate survey.
