Halifax, Leeds, Huddersfield - fare anomoly?

Hi,

This Sunday I will be waking up in Halifax. I plan to go to Huddersfield for the afternoon, then onto Leeds to catch the train home to London. I'll probably leave Halifax about 10am.

I was just having a play with National Rail enquiries to see what the fare options are. I plan to get the W Yorks dayrover for £6.50ish, but I got some weird results when I did a search for Halifax to Leeds (via Huddersfield) to see if a better fare comes up.

I see three fares
£14.60 – three singles; Halifax – Leeds, Leeds – Huddersfield, Huddersfield – Leeds
£8.70 – two singles; Halifax – Huddersfield, Huddersfield – Leeds. Route info says “Valid only on train services taking the most direct route option”
£4.20 – one single; This is the really interesting one. A single ticket from Halifax to Leeds, and priced as such, but with an itinerary of Halifax – Leeds, Leeds – Huddersfield, Huddersfield – Leeds. Route info just says “any permitted”

Not really important for me, I'll just get the dayrover. I thought it might interest people here anyway, though I am curious if anyone thinks getting the £4.20 to do all three trains would really fly.

The website is wrong. The £4.20 ticket is not valid to go to Leeds, leave Leeds and then return to Leeds. Once you've arrived at the destination, that's the end of the validity.

Do you already hold any tickets for the Leeds-London journey? If so, are the advances or walk up? Will you be on your OUT or RTN portion or is is a single?

I'm travelling from London for a weekend in Yorkshire. I have advance tickets between Kings Cross and Leeds in both directions. I snapped up the £13 advances when they went on sale.

I do this sort of trip fairly often. I'll go up north for a weekend watching Rugby League, so I get my advance tickets cheap, then figure out the finer details of what towns to go to later. It's thanks to all the great advice I've had on this forum I booked the 18:45 coming home. I can be confident that I will be on time to catch an early evening train to Leeds with a suitable connection time to spare, and if that train is delayed I am covered. Time was I would've booked the 20:45 for fear of missing my train and being stung for a full fare to London.

The website is wrong. The £4.20 ticket is not valid to go to Leeds, leave Leeds and then return to Leeds. Once you've arrived at the destination, that's the end of the validity.

Nor is the £4.20 ticket valid via Huddersfield. Travelling via Huddersfield requires 2 tickets. Or a Day Rover!

That said, is there any reason the Day Rover doesn't appear on the results for prices. London travelcards always show up as an option when appropriate, I'm sure I've seen other similar ones appear in the past (eg North Wales)

It's a PTE product so probably won't be recognised as easily by the fare checking systems.
