Stockport to Sinfin North???

Whilst waiting at Stockport for my train home to Sheffield on Saturday, I was bewildered to see a 19.41 service to Sinfin North listed on the information screens.

A quick google search reveals that apparently some charter services are shown with a fake destination to deter regular passengers from boarding the train, but if this is the case, why show the charter service on the information screen at all? Surely an announcement to the effect that the next train on the platform is not for public use would get the message across?

Purely a guess, but here goes!

Maybe it's psychology? If the screen says "not for public use", but a train stops with passengers on board, maybe people see this and assume the message is there in error?

Since Sinfin North closed 20 years ago in 1993, would a DMU from that period be scheduled to keep up the general ambiance ?

What would that be? Something like a 114 or 116? (I know the reason that the branch closed was because of the withdrawal of such first-gen DMUs in favour of Sprinters, which were incompatible with the track circuits on the line.)

It varies station by station - some will show 'Charter Train', some will use the actual destination (one at Sheffield showed 'Leeds' recently, that must have been fun to root out the excursion pax from regular pax), others use TIPLOC codes (such as at Nottingham a few years back which showed 'MACHENQ' for a tour down to Machen Quarry near Newport Gwent), and of course, some don't show them at all (New St is the best example I can think of). I prefer the 'Charter Train' or TIPLOC options. The worst ones are not showing it and relying on announcements, it's a huge faff at somewhere like New St, who typically only announce it as it pulls into the platform...

On an inbound railtour to the East Lancs, the staff at Victoria were quite obliging to alter the destination boards from just "Charter Train", to read:

"Plat 4 - Rawtenstall

Calling at:
Bury Bolton Street
and Rawtenstall."

Probably the only time you'll see that on a departure board - would dig out the photo but not too sure which corner of the net it's in.

Can you imagine if you got some randomer who was actually going to somewhere like Quaker's Yard on that day? That would be... interesting for the onboard staff to sort out.
