In Nottingham, yourbus is owned by Scott Dunn (son of Bob Dunn of Dunn-Line fame). There is a tenuous (although not acknowledged) link to Rotala through that connection.
Dunn-Line didn't go bust - the business was sold to Veolia when they were doing the "bus" thing.
on that basis there are huge numbers of Towns without a 'local' operator ( Stagecoach operations in Lincolnshire are run from either Lincoln (Roadcar) or Grimsby (ex GCT)...
It depends on how you define "local" in this context. Whilst in the example above, both Grimsby and Lincoln are part of Stagecoach East Midlands (on the Lincolnshire Roadcar operators licence), both have depots locally, with management also based there. The same can be said for all of Stagecoach.
There will be certain towns, however, where the depot itself is an outstation, so the operator cannot be said to be "local". Take March, Cambridgeshire. There is a depot there, but it is an outstation of Cambridge, Peterborough and Fenstanton depots of Stagecoach East - but the drivers are locally based!
Whilst O-licences may have addresses far away, you'll find most larger groups have a "local" presence - and as has been shown in the industry by the recent news that First is splitting the South West back into four seperate operating companies, seems to show that this "local" ideal works.
Cheers
