I've seen various pictures of BR diesels with various white embellishments. The white stripe on a 31, or a white cab surround on a 35 to name a couple. What others were there? Were these officially authorised? And why did they stop before the end of br blue?

The 104s used on Manchester-Blackpools used to have a waist level white stripe.
Lots of classes of loco carried white stripes. I saw members of classes 27, 31, 37, 47 with stripes at various heights.

Ones that i remember were 31 with white stripe
45 with White stripe
Deltic with white cab windows (Finsbury Park) think some 31's may also have got this
116 with white cab roof
Also Stratford 47's were treated to Grey cab roofs
Mk1 East coast pullmans , when the Pullman standards were down graded to 1st class the grey window sourounds were taken right to coach ends as was the Hadrian bar on West coast sleepers

Some class 33/1s had white cab surrounds. I have a photo of 33105 with them on a charter at Windsor & Eton Riverside.

Not sure of the numbers. but didn't some Eastfield Class 37's also receive a white stripe?

Perhaps it was because the basic, unadorned "Rail Blue" was just plain dull, especially on locomotives with little detail on the sides to relieve it. Deltics with no white were just hulks. That is why "Large Logo" came as a breath of fresh air.

The BR design panel was certainly responsible for the official application of the light grey stripes that were applied to many of the modernisation plan diesel locos on their BR green liveries, to break up the monotony of plain green on the slab sided diesels.

I am not sure whether the use of white stripes on the BR blue livery was an early continuation of this practice before the full stipulations of BR’s new corporate identity were fully enforced: This certainly seems probable with the Hymeks when they received white window surrounds with small yellow warning panels, before the all-over yellow fronts and cab window wrap rounds were adopted as standard. It seems that the application of white stripes on the BR blue livery was more of an unofficial practice carried out by particular depots – Such as Finsbury Park’s white window “Deltics” and Stratford’s silver/grey painted roofs.

Personally, I think the practice was rather pleasing. I remember being pleased to see anything different as a kid growing up with blue in the 80's. I could barely contain my excitement at seeing a 312 with a black window surround as it pulled into Northampton Station (very sad, I know!).

I just wish that the Westerns had made it into large logo, and the peaks into IC Swallow!

I've done some back-reading now and my recollections seem fairly accurate. Certainly in the case of the Hymeks with white window surrounds, Swindon decided to go ahead with their repainting before they had received the official livery drawings. No doubt this also occured at other depots on other regions, too.

Beyond this, the application of various "white bits" does seem to have been at least semi-unofficial based on a particular depots' preference: As mentioned previously, Eastfield were quick to apply white stripes to their 27s and 37s, as well as to a visiting class 44 that turned up once for an open day!

The Newton Heath based class 104s received white waist bands in an attempt to publicise the improved service provided by the Manchester Victoria to Blackpool "fast" services (Though I have difficulty in envisaging a service worked by 104s as being claimed to be "improved"!), and Buxton based DMUs began to receive white cab roofs in 1984: I wonder if this latter treatment also might have had a practical application in reducing the temperature in the cab during the hot summer months?

I heard somewhere the white strip on Rail Blue Class 31's was actually on a separate strip of metal welded onto the body? Not sure how true that is

It was. You can see it in older pictures, especially where it wraps around onto the ends. I think it got removed on some of them when they were refurbished.

Yup, Some Eastfield ones had a white stripe on the lower bodyside.
Thornaby favoured a high level white stripe just below the cantrail.
