Whats the location of 90050? Is it at the carriage shed visable from the end of Crewe station or is it at Crewe electric depot. Have read different things and Im unsure. Also is it possible to view it without having to be on a train?

Many thanks

It is visible from the main line if you look between the buildings and the Stoke line. It is easily visible from a Stoke train, but not as clear as when there was no leaves on the trees.

It is located at Crewe Carriage Depot, which is opposite Crewe Basford Hall, and sits between the Crewe-Stafford and Crewe-Stoke lines. It is very difficult to view the depot without catching a train I'm afraid. Although, I heard a report earlier this week its back in the depot.

Slightly OT, the depot next to Crewe station is Crewe Diesel Depot, which is used for stabling/storage of Riviera Trains Class 47s and Coaching Stock, with 58022 stored outside the depot, and numerous Class 60s (most of which I need  ) stored inside.

If it hasn't moved in the past few weeks, there is a photo taken from a passing train on the bottom of this page:

The LNWR depot buildings are just out of sight, to the right.

Don't want to start a debate or anything as I haven't passed the site myself recently (although I do require 90050), but I heard a report that it was no longer visible and was back inside.
By the way, those photos are from May, are they not ;)

I worked a train past earlier down the Stoke line and its definitely not where it was outside it must be inside as you cant see it anywhere in the yards.

Oh dear, it looks mauled to death now, cant be long till its gets cut up. Think I may chance driving up on a sunday and seeing if they'll let me pop my head round the shed door to look at it.

It has been on 'death row' for quite some time, hence the reason why 90016 was acquired by Freightliner in 2005.

So what happened in 2005 then? That was during an era when I lost interest in he railways before moving to London which re-kindled it as I was living so close to so many lines! I still need 50 along with several in the 20s and 30s which are also long-term stored and out of service. Doesn't look hopeful does it?

90050 is still visible from both the main line (saw it this morning) and the Stoke line (though it is mainly obscured by the leaves on the trees between it and the Stoke line). I passed on the Stoke line a couple of weeks ago and 90042 was visible too, just inside the small shed at that end of the depot. 90050 has been joined by a Europhoenix. Livery 86 (247 I think).

I believe it caught fire in 2004, and was either deemed uneconomic to repair at the time, or there was a surplus of 90s which meant repairing it straight away was of little priority.

Obviously it's still uneconomic to repair, hence why some of the (remaining) parts are being transplanted to 042, in order to bring it back to life. Freightliner didn't have a surplus, hence why 016 was bought next year.

Thanks.
I pictured 42 with 47 stabled outside Ipswich about 5 years ago but I will see if I can spot 50 dumped out the back using google earth as its images are usually 2 or 3 years old.. Crewe electric is one of the view depots i haven't investigated via google earth.

I don't think you'll be able to find 90050 on Google Earth at Crewe LNWR, it was moved there around a year ago
