Travelling from Leeds to Manchester Victoria one day this week. Doing the via Dewsbury route I almost always get a Pacer. What are the chances of getting a Class 158 on the Leeds-MCV route. Is it more likely on the fast(er) limited calls service than on the all stations via Halifax service.

Or 158s tend to only work the Blackpool North route that way?

Last time I used the 09:43 service to Selby, it was a 158. Its the one that goes via Todmorden and Halifax. I dnt know if this is normal traction but I have seen a few other 158s going to Leeds various parts of the day.

I've had varied results. The 1637 and 1737 ex-Leeds appear to be 158's. If you've time, you could (possibly) work out other services they are running. The only thing could be is that the unit is taken out of service for wharever reason, and replaced with a 142, 144, 150, 153's, or a 155. Hope this helps.

I've got the Man Vic via Dewsbury on a couple of occasions and it has usually been one of the better Pacers i.e. 3 carriage 144. That said, you really can get anything on Leeds - Vic trains. 158's, 155's, 150's, 142's or 144's. Can't remember if I've ever got a 156 that way, but I have on the Vic - Hudds, so they must be lurking around nearby.

The service is completely random. The faster services are just as likely to be 150s, 155s or even 142s as any other. The same individual trains tend to get the same traction every day, but unless you know the diagrams or use the service all the time it's impossible to work it out.

The 05:07 and 06:37 Leeds > Manchester are 158s. As is 16:24 Manchester > Leeds

One of the morning Victoria - Leeds units forms an S &C service afterwards. Can't remember the times, but this will surely be a 158

There's the 0643 from Manchester, which goes to Morecambe.

The S&C (and Lancaster/Morecambe) gets all sorts too, not just 158s.

Carlisles are always 158s, with some workings having a strengthening 153. The Morecambes get 150s, 142s or 144s, but I have never seen a 158 on that run. 150s sadly the norm on these now, depriving pax of the great views offered by a pacer.

If the 06:43 Victoria > Leeds forms the 08:19 Morecambe, then that train will be a 150.

158's have gone to Morecambe, in both the week and weekend. IIRC I was on one (from Leeds to Skipton) a couple of months ago.

Carlisles should also be 158 or 153+158. The 0849 LDS-CAR and 1155 LDS-CAR are usually 153+158.

Morecambes are a mix. The 0710 LAN-LDS is either a 144 or 142, but the 1349 LDS-LAN is normally a 150+153.

As for Man Vic to Leeds, again these are a bit of a mix, normally being worked by either 150s, 155s or 158s.

When I've caught the little north western recently it's usually been one of the better pacers (3 carriage 144). You must have been "unlucky" (inverted commas more because I quite like the 150‘s rather than dislike 144‘s).

Since the December change it is almost always 150s, including on the 07:10 Lancaster > Leeds. At least on Monday - Fridays; at weekends pacers are more common.

As for 158s, I don't dispute the poster who had one a couple of months ago, but as for that happening often, well I have lived in Shipley for 14 years and have literally *never* seen a 158 on a Morecambe.

It isn't common, but it happens occasionally when something's gone wrong. I recall it happening once late last year: a southbound Carlisle - Leeds was terminated short at Skipton because of a problem twixt there and Leeds, before then doing the Morecambe run from Skipton.

But of course this isn't uncommon in NorthernLand - enforced unit swaps because of problems (either with traction or infrastructure/late-running.) It's not unknown to see 150s or 156s doing the S&C

Talking of unit allocations on the Calder Valley, wasn't the recent cutting-back of the "Grand Tour" supposed to ensure that better and greater-capacity units like 3-Car 158s spend more time on the Leeds-Manchester core, rather than trundling three-quarters-empty between Huddersfield and Wakefield?

The 17:37 detaches off an S&C service arriving into Leeds about 17:05. I once made the journey from Carlisle to Manchester Victoria on the same unit on this service.

The S&C service in question I think is the 14:18 from Carlisle.
