Too intrusive?

Sky's ad agency has been showing off train windows capable of pushing ads direct into the skulls of tired commuters, as though advertising wasn't all-pervasive enough already.

The Talking Window uses bone conduction to startle commuters who rest their weary head against the glass of the train window, admonishing them for failing to have Sky Go installed on their mobile phone - which would keep them awake and alert with last night's Murdoch-supplied TV.....
Good old Rupe, always one step ahead in the race to be the most disliked person you can think of...

Travelling on an HST a few years ago at the end of a window I could hear a conversation about how a Top of the Pops recording had gone in hushed tones from someone who evidently was in a band. No-one in the immediately adjacent seats and I finally worked out it was the person at the opposite end of the window directing their voice towards it to keep the conversation as private as they could and totally failing. I suppose similar effect to the Whispering Gallery in St Pauls Cathedral.

The thing would hardly be able to differentiate between individuals who already have Sky, surely? Unless it's telling them to upgrade... I get adverts for Google Chrome while using Chrome on my phone, surely that's a lot easier to prevent! Setting up sound generators of some sorts on each pane - target for vandalism by exasperated passengers? Might encourage some to leave that bandwagon? Next thing we know, these'll be put into service in the quiet coaches, drilling Murdoch's evil words into our heads...

No no no, will those terminally p****d off with the stuff going on around them in the trains be prevented from banging their heads on the windows in peace in future? Is there ever going to be any respite for the quiet and gentle at heart?

Maybe it's a subtle way of preventing people from putting their heads on the glass so the TOCs don't have to spend so much cleaning the greasy mess off?

Pretty easy as your phone browser will be reporting it's name and version. Of course Desktop chrome is not Mobile chrome as far as user agents are concerned.

Now if it were BRIAN BLESSED ...

Just what everyone wants. Subliminal advertising while you nap!

You want to buy food on board...mmm, delicious food...you want it...

In the article the guy is keen to point out the non-commercial uses for the technology, but let's be honest, if there's money to be made from it... :|

Looking at the little transmitter box attached to the windows I have to say they look quite fragile. Who wants to bet how long they would last before people try to vandalise them? Considering the intrusive nature of such a medium I can see your average commuter and not just your 'undesirables' bashing them in put of sheer frustration.

I think this one is best filed under "well-thought-out concept, but it's never going to happen in the real world in a million years".

Then again I said the same about Google Glass two years ago

What about using it to transmit announcements to wake them up for the next station? :D

Now that's not a bad idea!

But in all seriousness this is an absolutely horrific idea, doesn't contravene some sort of human rights or advertising rules?
I wonder how much sky's approval ratings would be after this 'innovation' is installed.
Isn't advertising meant to appeal to people, not repel?

Also isn't one of the charms of train travel is being able to relax.

Sky may not be entirely serious. It may be proof of concept (advertising on contact with glass) or it may be a load of crap to get people talking.

But if bone transmission does get to work over there then it will only be a matter of time until it comes here.

There are already Bluetooth headsets (check out Jawbone) that work in a similar fashion to reduce background noise by picking up sound from touching your jaw.

There is a set of headphones, designed for use while swimming, that don't go over your ears, they attach to the side of your face and transmit the sound through your skull. I saw them on the Gadget Show.

When I was a bus driver the company experimented with a TV screen and video player with adverts scrolling continuously but it was fitted to the bulkhead behind the drivers cab and the only advert we could actually hear was the Heinz baked bean advert (every 4 minutes, de de de de de de de de beanz means Heinz <D) unfortunately the wires from the box to the TV used to get caught by peoples luggage and snapped, it was absolutely nothing to do with the pair of pliers I started carrying in my bag, honest!
Luckily the experiment only lasted a couple of months but 5 hours of "de de de de de de de de beanz means Heinz" used to drive you round the bend. ;)
