Worse, it was snowing (and freezing cold) and there was alot of snow on the marshland in the surrounding area!

By far, St. Erth. It's a gem of a little station, and the station that is next to home at Lelant. Lelant is a very basic station, but, when the Rivr Hayle is at High Tide, the river Basin at Lelant station makes it one of the best in Cornwall on a decent day.

Recently I covered all of the West of Scotland from Mallaig to Stranraer and I have to say that Weymess Bay was absolutely wonderful. I saw it on a Sunday morning and it was rather quiet which was good for photography, but I'd really like to be there on a busy day with the bookshop and restaurant/cafe/bar open and spend an hour or two there. If you have never been and are up in the Glasgow area, I recommend a ride to Weymmes Bay to see it's fantastic station.

Perth: always overlooked in threads like this, sadly. Honourable mentions go to Wemyss Bay, Maxwell Park and Sheffield.

Bradford Interchange, Leeds and Peterborough because they have all been 'home' stations at a time when I used the train a lot.

Metheringham and Hebdon Bridge for, ahem, intimate reasons.

Kings Cross for feeling like the most important station in the country.

Huddersfield for The Head of Steam.

St Pancras and Paddington (and hundreds of others) for the architecture.

Wye station in Kent. Did some work there a few years back, after working in London Stations all week this little country station was really nice, beautiful day (has a car park you don't have to pay for!). Has a manned level crossing so interesting to see the panel and chap operating the crossing.

Been in the bar many times. It's a Rangers pub. Don't expect much of a welcome here or the Wemyss bay hotel.

Sadly, many of the interesting small stations have been "improved" by using bus shelters to replace proper buildings. May be more economic, but mostly not very user friendly, often with inadequate protection from winds & rain.

And nothing in UK can quite better Koln Hbf in Germany, with the adjacent cathedral in full view.

Elmstead Woods

It has 2 fish ponds, a woodland waiting area, a herb garden, and is inundated with hanging baskets. Who'd have thought you'd find all that in Zone 4 London! It's like being in the country.

City Thameslink

It's subterranean under the city of London but not an LU station. It's two exits take you to different parts of the square mile. The northern exit brings you out on Holborn Viaduct but is inconspicuous under an office block. The southern exit onto Ludgate Circus with a pretty cool view of St Paul's and a short walk from Fleet Street. It's considered London Termini from the South even though it only has through platforms and Blackfriars is just a few hundred yards down the line. And it still has escalators down to an underground concourse just incase they ever built the proposed fleet line there.

Southampton Airport Parkway

This is almost my local station (it is for London-bound trains). Though the area is reasonably nice, I wouldn't have said it had a particularly outstanding location. Is this just referring to the closeness to the airport, or am I missing something?



I also like St. Denys, though. On the face of it, nothing really special compared to most old stations of a similar size - and yet the buildings and especially the footbridge just seem so nice, perhaps because it was recently repainted.

Does it actually have escalators? If so, are the operational/maintained?

I understood it only had some passageways - possibly useful for a future DLR extension?

The station itself is pretty dull, other than vaguely mimicking the airport roof.
But if you go out and head up to the top or penultimate floor of the nearby car park(if the weather is bad!) you get a really interesting perspective of the station and its traffic but you can also see the planes take off too!

One I‘ve not mentioned before, Selby.

Delightful country station, well kept, excellent buffet, nice canopies and of course the magnificent swing bridge. It‘s further helped that it still has the whiff of the ECML of yore.

Only spoilt today through being bowled out by a crappy 142 instead of the usual 158. Will I ever escape them !
