Castle Cary - passenger figures

Just a quickie -

Was watching local news last night, which had a feature on Glastonbury, which claimed that "Castle Cary, which normally sees 100 passengers a day, will be much busier during the festival".

Surely they've got their figures wrong a bit there - that would be less than 5 people per train? Wikipedia says 0.275 million for last year, making it ~750 people a day. Would certainly back up my first reaction of "No chance - those figures are quite a bit wrong!"

So, BBC or Wikipedia? I'm backing the latter.

Consider the fact that a lot of the Castle Cary footfall is for Glastonbury and that the Wiki figures are based on annual footfall, not daily footfall. The 750 you quote is the average per day over a year, it doesn't take into account fluctuations for events such as Glastonbury... Lies, damn lies & statistics...

Of course, and that's a fair point. But I just couldn't believe that for the rest of the year it was as low as 100!

And apparently it is also staffed 06:30 - 21:30 Monday to Saturday. I still smell a rat here...

Every train I've used to/from CLC has a few people. especially the London bound morning ones. There is staff to diaspatch trains I guess. until recently there wasn't even a ticket machine till Mr Eavis donated one.

The interesting thing to note is that the 0.275m figure is up on the previous year's 0.259m - despite there being no Glastonbury Festival in 2012.

BBC have made a mistake- FGW's video from Wednesday goes with "1000" on a normal day. It's only about 6000 or so extra passengers- though note that's many HSTs worth- for Glastonbury on the first day.

Sounds a lot more like it! I hadn't remembered that there wasn't a festival last year (post above) so I think we can safely assume that as you've pointed out, yes they have got it wrong.

As an aside, I like that video - a good promo for FGW and pretty much self-explanatory, even for "normals" who don't bother to read the description.

I suspect that might be the other way around. Total annual footfall including Glastonbury is 250k. 1000 passengers a day excluding Glastonbury would somewhere between 350k and 700k.
