Sorry about another post asking for advice.

What I need to do is the following:

(1) York to Manchester - Friday 19th July, evening-ish
(2) Manchester to Sheffield - Saturday 20th July, morning
(3) Sheffield to York - Saturday 20th July, as late as possible

I'm happy to have an advance booking for (1) but I'd like to have a decent amount of flexibility for legs (2) and particularly (3) - I'd like to be able to get the 23.12 from Sheffield to York, changing at Leeds, but might need to leave earlier.

The best I can see that fits my needs properly is (all prices with railcard):
York - Manchester (advance - many trains at this price on the 19th) - £7.25
Manchester - Sheffield (Anytime Day Single) - £12
Sheffield - York (Anytime Day Single) - £11.70

This comes to £30.95.

I'd be happy enough to argue my case if there's a ticket that's not too odd that is valid, but I'm a bit of a novice who's just spent a few hours in the last couple of weeks trying to puzzle out if there's any journeys that I regularly make that cane be done a bit cheaper...

Isn't an off peak return (SVR) York-Manchester Stations valid via Sheffield and/or Leeds. £17.50 with a railcard, maybe cheaper if bought through TPE website. Break of Journey allowed in both directions, I think.

No it is only valid on maps TP, TP+MH or LY none of which contain Sheffield

TPE is only cheaper on their own Advances (50% not 34% discount for 16-25 Railcard).

Break of journey is allowed in both directions on the SVR.

Would a York to Stockport Off Peak Return (20.80?) crack the problem?

Overnight stop in Manchester before resuming the following morning and heading for Sheffield, making sure that your train stopped at Stockport where you would switch from the outward portion to the return. All the fasts from Manchester to Sheffield are routed via and stop at Stockport.

Not a valid route Stockport - York via Sheffield

Comes up as valid on RSH but not to travel via Sheffield AND Leeds as per the OP's possible return itinerary.

You're going out on a Friday, so I'd suggest an off-peak return from York to Denton for £20.80. Denton's associated with Stockport, but you can only get back to Stockport from there by going via Manchester Piccadilly.

This is valid via Leeds and Huddersfield on maps TP+MH, and via Sheffield and Leeds on the way back on maps PS+ER. The Sheffield-Leeds section is only valid via Doncaster or Barnsley, however, so the ticket is no good on the XC train.

A single from Sheffield to Leeds to fill the gap costs an extra £6.75, for a total of £27.55.
