I carry a small suitcase around when on business; its the standard size advertised as cabin luggage. It fits on the Pendo overhead luggage rack well without any shoving or heaving required. In fact I can't recall a single UK train it hasn't fit on (am yet to travel on now an ex-460, 143, 144, 159, 166, 373, 380 or Mk2) but I often find people don't bother trying before giving up and sticking it on the seat.

Have you tried the 375s down here in Kent? The luggage space is truly shocking on some of them, especially on certain sub-classes.

I fit my soft bag on the overhead rack fine
377s have had those shutters removed to provide more luggage space

Nope, Liverpool trains leave the WCML at Weaver Jn, south of Warrington near Acton Bridge. There is a line between Bank Quay and Lime St however, via Rainhill, only used for an hourly stopper at present.

If that were the case then nobody would be able to board the train and dwell times would be astronomical.

Exactly a laptop bag. There is hardly any room for large suitcases. Being an intercity train you have to expect people will have large luggage.

I mentioned my hard shell 'cabin-friendly' suitcase before. It's 16" x 8" x 22", has a 36L capacity and fits nicely in the overhead rack on a 390.

I wouldn't expect to be able to fit anything bigger onto an overhead rack on any train. And a lot of luggage is made to 'cabin-friendly' sizes these days, as that's the only way to fly on a 'budget' airline without paying a fortune. So a lot of people will have bags that can fit on the overhead racks - if they try.

If you do the "roll instead of fold" trick you can get quite a surprisingly big lot of clothes into a small bag.

Very small? It's surprising how much you can get in if you pack properly - easily enough for a week away.

And if I need to take more, I have another 'cabin-sized' soft bag for the light things (which again will fit in the overhead rack) whilst the heavy things go in the case. Far easier to manoeuvre than one large suitcase.

That is pretty much the size case I have, and I'm often away M-F with it. And as I mentioned, fits in 390 racks no problem.

What exactly are you packing in that suitcase for 2 days? Unless you're going on a skiing holiday with thick coats and trousers you can fit loads in that suitcase! I'm planning to go away for a whole week with less room than that, if you pack wisely :P

Despite the fact that there is probably a weight restriction on what the luggage racks can handle, what size or weight of case do expect the average person to be able to lift up and place onto the luggage racks?

I've noticed that the discussion on luggage has primarily been focused on one person carrying one case. A good proportion of leisure travellers on InterCity services travel in groups, and for some groups (such as groups with children), it can be easier to carry 2 big suitcases instead of 3 - 4 small suitcases.

IMHO, I would say that the luggage facilities on the Class 390s for these groups are not great.

On a trip to London and back on 9th March, coach D of 390134 was horrendous, coach B of 390020 not quite as bad. I imagine the recently added extra vehicles are - for the time being - quieter than the older ones.

The 'bangs' from the pantograph will be the neutral sections. Bourne End Neutral Section is just over a mile south of Berko and Leighton Buzzard Neutral Section is 0.75 Miles south of Leighton Buzzard Section. This will be heard from inside the train. Any noises heard from on the station will mole than likely be the pantograph passing under the registration arms of the OHLE
