not sure if this is the right section to post feel free to move moderators.

As part of an ongoing project im asking help to specifically door positions each train station to the exit within zone 1-6 of london obviously being in bournemouth i dont get the oppurtunity to check or to research as much as i would like.

so if anybody has a spare 5 mins or two just to check the carriage and door positions closest to the exit of their local or station they are on and private message it be very handy for me as i dont have to spend as much time looking for them as i do by getting off train and back on this takes loads of time especially in the lesser known stations.

one thing to bear in mind, is that different length trains may well have different stopping positions, so the coach number may well change for convenience of for quick exit
Anyways, my local station, you need to be in car 4 on the southbound arrival at Hackbridge station for easiest access to the footbridge.
Northbound, coach 2 or 3 for 4 car trains, and coach 6 on 8 car trains

I've heard that there is an app for the iPhone that shows you them, but I'm not sure if it only covers the Tube.

As I'm on my phone atm, I shall post later on with a couple that I know :)

Oh good, so now everyone will be able to tell which door they want for their station and no one will spread out along the train! So in the evening peak we can expect to sit at stations for 3-4 mins whilst all doors remain closed except for the one closest tot he station exit and then people will start to complain about delays...great!

As this is already a known problem without any software guiding passengers, as you well know, perhaps there could be a mention on any system resulting from the OP's project that "it may be quicker to get off further down the train and turn left/right to get to the exit" for stations which are worse for this.

There's one called tube exits whitch is what I use and that does what is described and it is only for the tube though

As has been mentioned one difficulty with the mainline is that the position depends on the train length & platform. For example, some stations have several platforms a northbound train can run into which may not be decided until the train gets to the points before and that could affect positioning of the exit.

Normally the fourth coach on both platforms at Forest Hill. However if the train is a 8 or 10 coach, it's the 7th or 8th coach from London and still the fourth towards London.

On the 378s. with the open carriages, passengers walk from the 1st to the 4th coach as the train travels between Honor Oak Park and Forest Hill.

Hence the question mark. ;)

But in all honesty, if somebody is using a forum to crowdsource for an app because they can't be bothered to put the leg work in themselves then I'd quite like to know what that app is called so I can avoid it like the plague.

Good thing there's no app then.

this is not for an app or any profit making and i appreciate that some people actually think of door positions for their regular journey I have taken into account for any train lengthning is that a word? and many thanks for those door positions being have said

there is a reason why im doing for example i was at crews hill yesterday and noticed that the trains cross over there or just miss as it is just past enfield chase can work with my enfield town run other close misses can also work as i can go farther down a line if less frequency and work my way up a closer line at a certain point its all to do with logisitics.

most peOple board the train near the exit of their station usually anyway it may be great for where they are going or maybe not i mean how many people at the terminus stations go for front carriage front door

besides im doing this for racing i even went to ferryside just to get carriage position to see if i could hire boat and bus to get across towards tenby line

Are asking for specific stations? The information I have wont really help you if you live up North London. =/

Personally, it took me a while to catch on to certain patterns at stations, you've just going to have to pay a little attention when travelling and then after a while it'll stick in your head.

Shoreditch High Street Northbound, last door in last carriage. (I know it's the second door from the front, but would really make dwell times more bearable in the morning peak if they went from ANY OTHER door).

As well as the number of carriages in a train, it can depend upon the class of train, and also whether the train terminates or is a through service. This sort of thing will work for the Underground, as they are all the same type of train on a particular line, but on National Rail there are so many variables.

i thought i show the examples where getting off and walking instead of using the train to connect would make good examples of

enfield chase to enfield town 8 min walking pace
angel road to silver street 15 mins walking pace
battersea park to queenstown road 4 mins walking pace
barnes bridge to mortlake 14 mins walking pace
bromley north to shortlands 14 mins walking pace

its stuff like that im interested in trying to beat the trains connection wise

Yes, but in lots of stations the end of the platform means getting in the front of the train no matter what class!

I Did the 95% of the southeastern map does anyone know the railway door position for st mary cray every time I wanted to go there it was a long wait so decided to leave it for also couldn't get the 2 stations past Orpington as that was a long wait as well.

just the Hounslow loop and both ewell west and east and chessington branch to research next a few up at the top but then I can say I have been to all stations in zone 1-9 and stood on platform of all.

one of the nicest walks I did was Epsom downs to tattenham corner

Crystal Palace is generally the first door for trains to Victoria, London Bridge (via Tulse Hill) and rear doors for southbound trains (to London Bridge via Sydenham, Beckenham Junction and trains to Croydon/Norwood Junction). Exits are also for interchange. Lift access available
