Passenger jumped from a train

A man risked his life by jumping from a train and running across the tracks near to Leicester railway station.

The passenger, who was travelling on the Sheffield to London St Pancras service, pulled the emergency cord just after the train left Leicester station - because he realised it was not stopping at Kettering.

British Transport Police today released images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident, which happened on Wednesday, March 27 at about 4.40pm.

Pc Michael LeConte, who is investigating the incident, said: “A man boarded the 16.40 Sheffield to London St Pancras service at Leicester. Once the train had departed the station the man realised the train didn’t stop at Kettering.

"As the train passed through Leicester South junction, the man pulled the emergency cord which brought the train to a stop, opened the doors, then jumped off the train and ran off across the tracks and up an embankment."

Pc LeConte said the man's actions could have led to tragedy.

“Leicester station is very busy with trains coming in and out of the station all the time," he said. "The man’s actions were utterly reckless and he is extremely lucky he wasn’t injured or even killed.

“The train also had to be stopped and the guard had to reset the alarm, causing a delay to passengers on the service.

"Trains are fitted with emergency stop equipment to ensure the safety and security of all passengers. To misuse this equipment in this way simply because the man had boarded the wrong service was highly irresponsible and inconsiderate to both customers and staff.”

Officers said they had carried out extensive inquiries in an attempt to trace the passenger. After eviewing CCTV footage they have now identified a man they would like to speak to.

PC LeConte added: “If you know the man pictured, or his whereabouts, I would urge you to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should contact British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40, or via text on 61016 quoting B2/NE of 12/06/2013. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

What a stupid thing to do. People have died by doing this sort of thing, indeed.

The best idea is to consult staff, not break your way out of a train! The stupidest thing is that he probably made things more inconvenient for himself by having to find a way off the track, up an embankment and then (presumably) back to the station.

What an absolute idiot. I wouldn't like to have seen the inevitably messy result if he had tried the same thing on the third rail network...

Obviously not the smartest tool in the box, he could have waited until the train was near Kettering so he saved himself the walk!

All the time in London you see idiots on the bus who open the rear doors with the Emergency Exit button. They think they should be entitled to get off wherever they fancy, who cares about anyone else!

Unfortunately idiots are everywhere are are rather resourceful, so you are never going to prevent this.

The only thing you can do is, if he is ever caught, throw the book at him in the hope you can put others off.

Hopefully someone will identify him.

Hopefully with the publicity this is getting, if he ever uses the railway network again, someone will spot him.

I've known of somebody doing this, but their behaviour on the train before jumping out meant that there was DNA left behind, so it was a relatively easy trace, and they were returned to prion to serve out the remainder of their sentence (they were on bail, so they had a tag/curfew, which was why they were going ape about having missed their stop...)

He should have checked where it was stopping before he got on, safer to miss a train than to cause inconvenience to others.

All this for a Wheatabix...

Worrying thing is, the fixed penalty he would be issued for trespass is probably less than the amount East Midlands Trains would charge him for "intentionally & deliberately travelling beyond his tickets validity". :P

Prehaps he should study this report.

http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/docsummary.php?docID=475

Primary cause was passenger pulling the cord because he wanted to get off at a station the train didn't stop at.

That's an interesting opinion. However the report says,
the collision resulted from the signalman at Winsford Station clearing the block instruments although he had not seen the train pass the box and subsequently accepting the Postal train.
