I recently successfully appealed a penalty fare on behalf of a colleague, and I noticed the following:
I have always been lead to believe this was not the case. What do you think?
When travelling with Southeastern on a penalty fares route, you must carry a valid ticket for the class of travel required (and valid railcard if appropriate) for your entire journey. If a station doesnt have a ticket office, or the ticket office is closed, a ticket can be purchased from the self-service ticket machine(s) at the station. If the ticket you require isnt available from the self-service ticket machine(s), then a permit to travel should be purchased from the machine at the station. Where these are not available, tickets should be purchased at the first opportunity during the journey by finding the conductor immediately upon boarding the train. Passengers should not wait for the conductor to come to them.
