I've thought about it and I think in hindsight it's best that I find somewhere to stay in Penzance, within easy walking distance of the station and town centre as I didn't mention that I have health problems that might require a short rest during the day.

I see what you say. The nearest hotel would be the Cliff Hotel about 75 metres from the station. There may be some B&B in and around Leskinnick Street and St. John Terrace, which is over the road from the station. There is the Longboat Inn, again just over the road from the station, and if they do B&B, I'm not sure and I am sure there are a couple of guest houses right alongside the station and just over the road but they are on the main road out eastwards from the town centre and may be a bit noisy at times with traffic. As I said in an earlier post, the Cliff hotel does have the advantage of overlooking the station and a good view of St. Michael's Mount.

Penzance itself is a bit hilly but not I'd say a difficult climb up Market Jew Street, and then up Causeway Head to the top of the town. The bus station is right next door to the station and there is a tourist centre between the station and the bus station. There may also be B&B and guest houses over the road from the harbour-side too, and still close to the bus and railway station. Hope this is of use.

I was thinking once you arrived at penzance jump on another train and get somewhere else to stay.

The only idea I'd have for jumping on a train from Penzance for somewhere else to stay would be to St. Ives but in view of the fact you mentioned your health problems and needing a rest during the day I'd perhaps sadly rule out St Ives as it is quite hilly and you'd need a bit of a climb, even from the station to get to some accommodation that would be affordable.

I was in Penzance on Wednesday and had a great day out using the Y-P discounted £8.90 Ride Cornwall ticket. I went on the route 300 and it was one bus throughout. Four open top volvo citybuses were in use on the 300 circuit and the Palatine 2 open top Olympian was in use in the route 1/1A. The 300 route is a must when visting penwith, although its not quite the same since when it was 4 open top Vr's!

As for Penzance itself, I have stayed at a few guesthouses on Alexandra Road which is a flat walk along the seafront or via the 1/1A/300 route bus.

The 2013 timetable suggests the service is not a through trip now

On a side note First seriously need to get there website proof read. Penaznce and Explorere stand out!

I understand there are 4 Alexander RV Volvo B10Ms OR D10ms Citybuses D***GHY, Volvo Olympian Northern Counties Palatine 2 34137 (which is the one that hit the bridge at Falmouth Town around 18 months ago and K626LAE Leyland Olympian Northern Counties Palatine 1 34626 currently in 300 livery

Not sure there is a "300 livery", the vehicles you mention are in Barbie livery although they may have some form of route branding.

We always have a 'proper' Cornish pasty from a bakery on the main street in Penzance, but we have never stayed there overnight, so I can't offer any suggestions for accommodation.

But I urge anyone to try a pasty there, even if you take it with you on the train for the journey home. Mrs Greenback described it as bit like a Sunday dinner covered in pastry!

That'll be Warrens up on the right just before the statue of Humphrey Davey.

There is also a Warren's inside at the top of the shopping centre thing by the harbourside. Rowes which are better up in the Causeway place. I'd personally recommend Phelps in Marazion though.

Best by far for pastys at the moment down here is "Baker Toms" who are a relatively new company. Not sure where they have retail units or if they have entered Penzance yet

Thats correct, they a strip of branding across the front windscreen and a small advert sized piece on each side.

Unconfirmed but I heard from a member of staff that the Citybuses are getting withdrawn at the end of the season but the person who told me had no idea what would replace them.

Hopefully it is not the end for the 300 service.

They've probably decided in anticipation of their drivers hitting a few more bridges in better buses by the time next season starts

Thanks for that. I'm glad that I have travelled on them this year already. I doubt it would be the end for the 300 though as it's such a popular route. First D & C may be able to get hold of some more vehicles cascaded from other parts of the group

Unfortunately to my knowledge there are no surplus open top buses so any vehicles cascaded would need to be converted to open top.

Not sure what sort of cost would be involved per vehicle as at least 4 would be needed to maintain the present service.

One other option would be to source open top buses from dealers such as Ensign if such vehicles are available and suitable.

Perhaps closed top deckers will be more suitable next summer given the weather we seem to get at summer time. As I write this it is overcast with a fresh wind and not ideal for travel on the top deck of the 300!

I know one of the managers at my local depot so next time I see him I'll see if he knows anything.
