oldest interior of a train

At the moment the oldest livery is the GNER blue being carried by a few Class 91 locos.

When these have been repainted, I think the oldest will be the Virgin Trains livery as on the Pendolinos and Voyagers, which is from 2001 (correct me if I'm wrong on this one though).

I thought the oldest livery was on some of the the Greater Anglia 321s in the old First Great Eastern Livery. I'm willing to put the FCC Class 313s as the oldest interior, despite the new seats, the wall panels and flooring still dates from the late 70s.

None of them carry this livery now - they've all been repainted into Greater Anglia/Polar Bear/National Express East Anglia livery. It lasted until quite recently though (a couple of months ago if i remember correctly). The units also have old interiors - Many of them have the First Great Eastern green seat moquette and blue handrails from the late 1990s.

I'm sad the First Great Eastern livery is no more: it was one of my favourites! Are there still any class 331s operated by GA with NSE seats? It's one of my favourite seat patterns and I loved the livery too

Not sure about that as dont sign or travel much on them. I take it you are refering to the moquet used on that new search for cheapest Broadband TV commercial?

I was just going to mention them. Some of the carriages are still in their BR livery!

Yeah I do mean that one. It looks like a slammer or a mk1 carriage on that advert! I live in the land of South West Trains DMUs and we don't get much variety. Really I have the choice of a class 159 or 158! Both very similar really. No interesting trains here unfortunately, don't even get freight!

I havn't really spent much time in that part of the world recently, so sort of assumed it was still lingering on as there was still quite a few units in that livery when I was last at Liverpool street about 4 months ago.

I'm sure there was one that was a Great Western refurb, but the others seemed older. I've not been on it for quite some time, though.

Definitely has to be a contender, this is quite a good video of both services. Plenty coaches in Inter-City livery and the interiors don't look any newer!

The flooring was replaced a few years back, for a new vinyl flooring that is easy to wash. Side panels were stripped and repaired/repainted/replaced, including the heaters and other metal cabinets under seats etc.

The doors were repainted and new glow-in-the-dark strips added by the lighting. The seats themselves cleaned and repainted, with new seat coverings.

New thermostats were also fitted to improve the heating in the winter, or more notably to turn the heating off when it got hot!

Nobody should expect to board and see the train as it was in the 1970s, unless you look into the private area by the cab which is probably unchanged. Ditto the area by the cab on a 317 which will still look the same and still have the original safety posters for the driver etc.

I haven't been to the Isle of Wight lately. But I can't help thinking you would find something aboard those former tube train units (is it 1939 they were built) that dates back a very long time.

I was thinking that as well but it appears whilst the stock is old the decoration both inside and out is a relatively new retro fit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_Line_Trains

Many of the Northern 150 units retain their original interior with brown walls & partitions, black plastic backed low seats, original bare exposed light tubes, seating layout incorporating a parcels area with sliding door etc. The only thing to have changed is the seat covering.

I think all the ex-LM ones are like that.

The ex-ATN ones that Northern acquired with the original BR interior - including BR passenger notices - got an internal repaint and new vinyl flooring as well.

The ex-FNW ones got replacement seating and an accessible toilet fitted around the turn of the millennium.

Apart from the ex-1st class section, GAs 3-car 170s date back to 1999.

AFAIK The coach is the Mk2 buffet on the Spa Valley Railway.

As for stock i was thinking of 313 units, though as someone mentioned some of the 319 units still have their original fascia panels.

Scotrail have refurbished most of there's. Are the leasing terms different for 158 782? I know a few were designated as Northern units which were only supposed to be short-term at Scotrail but finished up staying there.

Why were there old design seats put in 786 and 789? The seats that were already fitted were the comfiest I've ever sat on!

I think the 159s on my local line have original seats but the covers have been replaced fairly recently. I do think they are some of the most comfortable seats on modern trains with a decent amount of legroom!
I do like the old interiors of trains though; as shabby as they are, I find them quite appealing!

Hear, hear! I love SWT 158/159s. When travelling on FGW Wessex Main Line, I always head for the carriages with the old seats.
